Protesters storm Texas capitol shouting ‘treason’ after TSA bill scuttled
Source: RawReplay
By Stephen C. Webster

After a bill that would criminalize TSA agents who carry out pat-down searches was scuttled by the Texas state Senate, a group of loud and angry protesters stormed the capitol building chanting “treason” and demanding that state lawmakers stand up to the federal government.

The bill was shelved by its senate sponsor after a U.S. attorney wrote to the legislature warning that all flights in and from Texas could be canceled if the TSA is prevented from ensuring their safety.

Led by firebrand conservative radio host Alex Jones, the activists demanded an end to invasive searches at airports, calling Texas politicians “cowardly” for caving to federal pressure.

This video is from Fox 7 in Austin, Texas, broadcast Wednesday, May 25, 2011

1. Where were these folks during the rhetorical donnybrook of last Thanksgiving?
Edited on Thu May-26-11 04:13 PM by KansDem
I don't recall too many Texans speaking out on the national level against TSA groping? Am I mistaken?

on edit: flights in and from Texas could be canceled if the TSA is prevented from ensuring their safety -- I don't really think the TSA can "ensure" one's saftety...

14. Oh, so the only time Texan residents speak out is when the Lege is in session...
Got it!

You don't suppose last year it was "the TSA is keeping us safe from freedom-hating mid-east terrorists," and this time it's "Obama's forcing TSA groping down our throats?"

It seems to me with these folks the issue is more "get government off our backs" and less "touching another's genitals is wrong."

4. That's who we should have ran as an Independent against Perry
He would have sucked away all the batshit crazy voters leaving Perry only the religious right and the mega rich.

Bill White would have walked away in a landslide.

The State of Texas has no authority over the conduct of federal officers performing an exclusive federal function.

That war is over. The South lost.

If someone wants to litigate the issue, as some have chosen to do, that's great.

But running around with rootin' tootin' secessionist bullshit is not helpful.

25. "someone that couldn't get a job at McDonalds"... interesting little tell, there.
See, I think a lot of what's driving this is people who think they shouldn't be 'subjected' to suspicion by their 'lessers'; it's like the "I'M not a thief, I drive a Lexus" tantrums over showing a receipt at Best Buy... or, god forbid, you've got middle class WHITE people being searched by (gasp!) minorities...

So would it be okay if the TSA pat-down was done by a Harvard MBA or a highly employable tech professional?

7. Waiting for a secessionist issue that had broader political appeal

The neo secessionists, in many states, want to ban federal currency, regulations, etc.

They are pushing this one, since they know it has broader appeal than, say, bringing back slavery.

10. And they are right, too
Sorry, I hate the idea that people can vote in rights to PROTECT themselves from violations of the 4th Amendment, and people act like it's a good thing.

Good for Texas, and thank you for fighting tyranny. I will never view the right to search my body or force me to walk through X-rays that do NOTHING to make me safer as anything other than tyranny.

How you can consider yourself a Democrat and give away your own freedoms is beyond me.

11. I hate the TSA as much as anyone but that bill was just stupid.
I assume the Republican assholes would get rid of the TSA and put in a private company which would in no way be accountable to anyone. Don't get me wrong, the TSA grope a thons are wrong (not to mention ineffective) but that was not why this bill existed. It was just a stupid power play by the state.

20. And thank god for Texas, because they are very right on this one
Do you honestly think the TSA pat down of people flying from state to state, in this country, is going to do a damn thing to stop terrorism?

I don't. I think it's a big bonus check for the security industry.

I clearly have a strident opinion, since I have to take my heels/boots/shoes/sandals off every time I fly, and I am not going to stop bitching.

This kind of policy has done exactly zero to add more safety in the air, and has added 100% more annoyance, and an attitude that we have to submit to the police state.
