Surprise! Westboro Baptist Church Plans to Protest Joplin Tornado Victims

COMMENTARY | As Joplin, Mo., recovers from a devastating blow from an EF5 tornado, residents are beginning to pick up the pieces. Search and rescue efforts are gradually turning to recovery as emergency vehicles are leaving town and volunteers are finishing their work.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m., the same day President Obama is scheduled to visit the city. An unwelcome group may also be coming to Joplin this weekend.

Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has a press release on its website stating they will show up and protest on Sunday. At the same time, a counter protest is also being organized on the Facebook page called "Counter Protest Westboro Coming to Joplin."

Yes, the same Westboro Baptist Church that has made national news for protesting military funerals is heading to Joplin. Topeka is about three hours away, an easy drive for anyone in the Phelps family.

However, logistics may limit the ability of the church to do anything in Joplin. The damaged areas are still under lockdown. Residents and property owners, as well as emergency workers, are the only ones allowed in the destruction zone. Westboro certainly won't get anywhere close to damaged areas. They won't get near shelters, as homeless and injured people need to rest and recover.

5. They say they are going to be everywhere. And
they rarely show up. But still, the news of just a threat to be there hits. When will we all just ignore them?

8. Is it just me or does the WB Church have a death wish?

You do not have to be Nostradamus to see that this is eventually going to end badly for these people. People who perceive they have nothing to lose + sever emotional pain + screaming zealots = lots of headlines about bad bad stuff.

9. I'm sorry feel badly about me if you want
but I'm this close from wishing there was a localized tornado that sweeps up the WBC clan and rids us of them completely.

Yes, it's wrong, it's hateful, I got it, but it's honestly something I have to struggle not to actively desire.

I am sure that they would have been among the ascenders.

11. They obviously died because they supported fags.
:eyes:

I STILL haven't gotten an answer on this simple question: Do the Westboro Bastards get tax-exempt status? As far as I'm concerned, they're a for-profit business. Most of them are lawyers and all they do is find ways to sue people and make money. The protests are a front, other than that they use them to incite people so they can sue them.

21. I remember that!
In Broad Daylight.

Skidmore has a special place for bullies and that place would be on a public street with lots of witnesses who briefly turn blind, deaf, and mute.

15. If this group isn't "crying 'Fire' in a crowded theater," what IS?!1
What will it take, for grieving people to turn into a mob and beat the crap out of them for the SCotUS to rein them in?

On a Univision news summary, there are frequent incidents when indigenous people tie a rapist or some other heinous offender to a pole, usually stripped to the underpants, then the townspeople beat the crap out of him. By now, without the details, I say, "It's in Peru." And it almost always is.

16. This could very well be a mistake on WBC's part,
There is a huge, "take care of our own problem" streak that runs through the hillbillys of SW MO and the Ozarks. It wouldn't surprise me if Phelps and his clan wound up mysteriously dead, with nobody talking. It has happened before, throughout this state.

17. They must be so miserable
being at such a dizzying height of arrogance. I don't know how people like that can sleep well at night. For them, to do what they do, they really must truly believe they are better than everyone else.

18. They issue some press release that they're going to protest everything
and then half the time they don't even show up.

Yet the media loves to fall all over themselves reporting on the 'planned protest'.

19. Fred needs to watch himself...
because last I checked, Topeka is in tornado alley.

I'm just slightly too far away from Kansas to do this, but if an EF4 comes through Topeka and destroys West 12th Street, could someone in Kansas please drive to what used to be 3701 West 12th and place a sign in front of it that says something like "Fred, God has had enough of your shit."

20. It's an ill wind that blows no good
There are many conveniently located broken 2x4's to beat these fools with. Find something like a pick handle, and I'tll bring back fond memories to all the Phelps' of beatings from Pastor Fred.
