1. I loved Mr. Rogers as a child in the early 70s, and when I was watching it as a parent in the late
90s and early 2000s, I could hardly watch it without crying. All I could think about was how good he was, and how a truly good and kind person was so rare to find anymore. He truly, truly cared. What a great message he has, for all time. He was my first crush; I wanted to marry him when I was 6.

3. Fred Rogers was all the more remarkable for his pre-TV background.
which is unknown to most viewers. Fred was a Navy Seal in Vietnam, a specialist in hand-to-hand combat. It has been reported that Fred had something like 16 kills to his credit in hand-to-hand combat, in addition to also being a weapons expert. The reason he always wore sweaters on the show was to hid the armful of tattoos he sported from that period. After returning from Vietnam he became a pastor and went on to become the highly successful and wonderful person that we all watched and loved. A truly exceptional man.

5. That's all wrong, except for the fact that he was a pastor.
Check Snopes.

8. Just curious as to who long you believed this little story?
It's fun to imagine Mister Rogers in the scene in the bell tower from Saving Private Ryan.
I can just see him plunging the knife into the enemies chest as he sings "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood..."

10. Mr. rogers would not want me to be snarky, so I'll be polite.
Please read the Snopes article, particularly the opening paragraphs--and have a lovely day!

14. When did his program start? My children who watched me protest
the Vietnam war were also watching him - unless I am way off in my memory.

6. From Google....
Fred Rogers won our hearts, true enough; but the rest of the story as told in this email is hogwash. After graduating from Rollins College in Florida with a degree in music in 1951, he immediately embarked on a broadcasting career — a career that continued uninterrupted for nearly 50 years, even while he studied for a Bachelor of Divinity degree, eventually becoming an ordained minister in 1962. Far from hiding a secret past as a trained killer, Fred Rogers was a truly gentle soul who devoted his entire adult life to educating and bettering the lives of children, and as such he deserves to be remembered.

9. I did an episode of MRN. Parents who have to work.
My son came with. (He was big man on campus for weeks having played with The Prince!) It was the most empathetic, sensitive, child-friendly set I've EVER been on and one of the most FUN! We played great music and the kids watching LOVED IT, sending loads of mail.

11. Mr. Rogers
was truly special. I did not have him as a kid, I was in love with Captain Kangaroo, but saw him while babysitting and did not think much about it. As I raised my sons I became aware of what a truly unique wonderful man he was. Knowing he is not here with us anymore is very sad.

12. Best of all,
Fred was a vegetarian who told people, “I don’t want to eat anything that has a mother.”

13. Parody of Mister Rogers originally performed by National Lampoon's Christopher Guest and Bill Murray
http://www.youtube.com/user/paulgad

It was a hilarious parody then and even more so now that I hear it about 30 years later.

No disrespect to Fred Rogers, I did admire his commitment to kids, but he did also sound like he did and was a candidate for such parody in contrast to a bass player, both brilliantly portrayed by Bill Murray and Christopher Guest.
