President tours devastated Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. | President Barack Obama, fresh off a six-day diplomatic tour of Europe, stood near the center of tornado-ravaged Joplin Sunday afternoon and promised a sustained federal response to revive the devastated city.

“We’re going to be here long after the cameras leave,” he said, standing amid destroyed houses and debris at 23rd Street and Kentucky Avenue. “We’re not going to stop until Joplin is back on its feet.”

The president said of the storm damage: “This is a national tragedy, and that means there will be a national response.”

He cautioned that it would be “a long, tough slog ahead.”

The president’s plane touched down at 12: 22 p.m. Joined by Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and Gov. Jay Nixon, he stood in the midst of the six-mile swath of devastation by 12:45 p.m.

7. No, it's the job.
Unfortunately, Bush never figured that out.

Laying on of the hands is an essential of leadership since the days of priest/kings.

9. Bush thought he was called by higher powers to serve..
He was right but those higher powers unfortunately were the oil industry.

3. He is one remarkable guy
And the right is strangly silent this time - usually they would be critizing him for - well, everything.

5. Actually our local right wingers are going nuts over this visit to Joplin
They are mad that Obama waited a week to visit, claiming it's just a photo op, it was too cold to play golf today, and on and on.

Their comments on this particular article aren't too bad but they have been horrible on other articles.

11. Here is what Sen Roy Blunt said about the delay
He is our Republican Senator from MO. This is the only time he has EVER said a word I agree with.

"I don't know if the president could have been more helpful," Blunt told reporters Thursday during his weekly conference call. "Sunday is soon enough, and Sunday is probably the soonest that they can deal with a presidential visit.

"I have plenty of things to disagree with the president on, and this doesn't need to be one of them," he added. "I wouldn't have cut it short if I was him."

13. He called immediately and
seeing as he was on the other side of the world and there was really nothing he could physically do to help with the destruction, I don't see what people have to criticize him for (I know.... they don't need a reason).

What short memories they have - remember Bush's response to Katrina?

pffffttttt - just a bunch of haters, hatin.

6. I sure hope "tours" isn't the noun and "devestated" the verb....
