What if progressives started going door to door like the Witnesses?
If all of us could reach out and convert at least one conservadem, teabagger or republican, think of how much better this country could be!

At the very least, we should be converting our relatives or figure out effective strategies for doing so.

Yes, that's exactly right. I assume the point is not to annoy people, right?

13. Hah...
When people come to my house to try and get me to do anything, the only thing they really convince me of is that they're jerks.

If people want to be annoying, let them do it in parking lots or streetcorners. Not violating the sanctity of peoples' homes.

3. It's called precinct walking. It works.
You don't convert a lot of people, but you can get people to go to the polls. It's what to do.

4. Or have a weekly, secular service for workers everywhere...kind of like church...
Discuss current events, sing labor songs... and instead of sermons, have lectures on economics from a Marxist point of view.

5. It's called canvassing
Edited on Tue May-31-11 12:26 PM by tabbycat31
I've done it for several election cycles since 2008. It works.

ETA they're not always persuasive. That depends on the type of canvass you are doing and when in election cycle it is.

9. Yeah - look how well that worked for the Witnesses.
Nothing like becoming a sad punchline to boost those enrollment numbers. I say this as a person with a large number of Witnesses in my family.

11. Have "the Witnesses" become the majority religion as a result of their canvassing/soliciting?
Need I say more?
It may scoop up a few more, that could help in the swing states. But I wouldn't count on mass conversion.

12. Sorry...I don't try to "convert" anybody...
And I don't stand for people coming to my door to "convert" me, either. I don't care who it is.

Seriously if you're going to knock on my door Saturday morning to tell me about your religion, I'm going to tell YOU about your religion as well.

15. OK, so two things....
1. Not even some Democrats think this is a dandy idea, so imagine how non-Democrats would react to Progressives trying to convert them. Might as well expect pigs to speak.

2. Out of curiosity, I looked up the membership numbers of JWs in the US in 2010. It's approximately 1,178,000. And then I looked up the US membership numbers for another well-known group. Their membership isn't as easy to track, but approximate numbers are: 1,264,000.

The group? AA. They don't advertise. They don't go door to door. They rely solely on word-of-mouth to spread their message.

That just goes to show that if the message is good enough, it generally doesn't need to be hawked like snake oil. I'm not saying the Progressive message isn't a good one. Only that many people know it's out there, but don't see it as being the panacea to all the world's ills.

20. Waht we really need to do is
get ALL the Democrats out to vote ALL the time and not just in presidential years. No need to convert anyone,We have the numbers by far IF everyone voted, so the dems just need to get more people to vote.
