Robertson: Fighting Muslims Is Just Like Fighting Nazis
Robertson: Fighting Muslims Is Just Like Fighting Nazis
Submitted by Brian on May 31, 2011 - 10:23am

On the 700 Club today, Pat Robertson once again spoke out against American Muslims, singling out the construction of mosques and the purported threat of creeping Sharia law. Robertson likened critics of Muslims to opponents of Nazis and rejected claims that his opposition to rights for Muslims is bigotry, asking, “I wonder what were people who opposed the Nazis, were they bigots?”

“Why is it bigoted to resist Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and to say we don’t want to live under Nazi Germany?”
Robertson said. “But oh it’s bigoted if we speak out against a force that slowly but surely is trying to exercise domination over the world.”

1. Me: Listening to Robertson is just like listening to hobo on the streetcorner with a cardboard sign.
Robertson is just better dressed.

11. Robertson is a terrorist because he interferes with women's lawful reproductive rights.
Hey! You're right! One CAN argue that he's a terrorist.

19. Few deserve it more.
During the Korean War, 2LT Pat Robertson, USMC abandoned his command en route to the fighting to become...

The Liquor Officer.

He went on to do bigger jobs, like use his "parishioners'" money to build the PTL network.

Then he sold his ill-gotten tee vee empire to Rupert Murdoch for $1.9 billion.

A fine American, son of a Senator from Virginia -- a Democrat of the Old South conservative strain.

23. The record shows Pat was not a virgin when he got married.
For decades Robertson said that he and his wife were married in March 1954, nine months before his first son's birthday. When he ran for President, however, Time magazine dug up Robertson's marriage license, and found that he was married in August of 1954, about ten weeks before his first son's birthday. Robertson said he and his wife had always celebrate their anniversary in March, on his own birthday, "because our son was conceived that day." In more recent public biographies, Robertson's wedding date is listed correctly, but now his firstborn son is frequently listed as having been born in 1955.

38. He won't get his and it's because his crimes are completely lawful.
And anyway, him getting his would not undo the damage he has done. Liquidating his estate would be a step in the right direction, though.

It's a cunning plan, and you fuckers will get exactly what you deserve when it comes to full fruition. Heh, heh, heh.

Oh wait; you sort of made a broad brush statement there. I might have taken it for something other than naked bigotry.

8. Fighting Fundy Christians is just like fighting Nazis.
“But oh it’s bigoted if we speak out against a force that slowly but surely is trying to exercise domination over the world.”

Robertson is suffering from an irony deficiency. It's given him a debilitating case of hypocrocy and libel. ALL Nazis were committed to wiping out Jews (or at least to relocating them to--well--anywhere but here.) ALL Nazis were committed to dominating Europe and Britain and France's colonial empires by force of arms. Whatever one thinks about Islam as a school of thought, the fact is most Muslims do not think that or else only think it in a theoretical sense like most Christians view Judgment Day or the way most Jews leave an empty seat for Elijah at Passover.

20. That's not really true.
All fundis are nuts/looney tunes, but most believers are able to compartmentalize their religious beliefs sufficiently to avoid it taking over their rational thinking. MOST of the people I know are at least nominally religious, some very much so. Most of them are not crazy, however irrational their professed dogma is.

27. Well, yeah.
They take it seriously when they think about religious things or when extending what they regard as the ethical lessons of religion to other things. But mostly, yeah, it's in the background.

34. Most Religions, Sir, Prescribe For thw Whole Of Life
And if taken seriously, influence, and ought to influence, all aspects of life and thought. The degree to which religious belief can be said to be 'in the background' for someone is a measure of how little he or she actually takes it seriously.

39. Stop calling me "sir." Also, I agree.
Religion tries to insinuate itself into all aspects of life. Frankly, the more successful it is in doing so, the worse off the people are.

30. At what point does this speech, this "religious" speech, become incitement to violence.
Comparisons to "fighting Nazis" would appear to me to come damn close to premeditated incitement to violence.

And I don't care which religion the fundamentalists claim to adhere to. Pat Robertson and his ilk scare me more than 99.9% of the Muslims in the world.
