Wow! Help track down laptop thief in the Oakland CA area.
I have been thinking of getting 'Hidden' for my MacBook Pro. I am convinced:

This Guy Has My MacBook

On March 21, 2011, my MacBook was stolen from my apartment in Oakland, CA. I reported the crime to the police and even told them where it was, but they can't help me due to lack of resources. I'm currently in the process of contacting the mayor's office. Meanwhile, I'm using the awesome app, Hidden, to capture these photos of this guy who has my MacBook.

This thief is toast.

1. Wow...what are the odds Apple uses that same app to spy on its users?
Pretty high, I'd say.

3. Spy on them for what?
Edited on Tue May-31-11 03:13 PM by onehandle
Windows computers have cameras too, and judging by their security record, I would assume that someone in Russia or China is actually spying on them.

And you have to manually install 'Hidden' for it to work, which is not an Apple Product.

5. Why?
So, Apple would have photos of me picking my nose while I read DU?

I also have an app that will take a picture of someone who has my computer, but it only works when I activate it.

4. I hope you find your laptop, but
I reported the crime to the police and even told them where it was, but they can't help me due to lack of resources.

This just shows how low the GOP and their no-tax program has brought the country. Our town doesn't have enough resources to respond to crimes either -- however they are able to break a half dozen officers free to hide in bushes and try to entrap gay men into exposing themselves.

18. Oakland hasn't had the resources for well over a decade...
if it ain't a murder, don't bother to call the Oakland PD... assaults and burglaries take hours for them to show up and even take a report... well, unless you're Wells Fargo—then 3 or 4 cops will show up within 10 minutes.

This isn't a new Republican thing, it's an old Prop. 13 CA thing... in a city that was pretty much in on the ground floor on job exporting.

10. I don't think it would strain OPD's resources...
for them to let you look for a match in the books of mugshots.

I would try that.

11. I doubt that's the thief.
Guy probably bought it from the thief.

Anyone who sells a MacBook Pro is probably a thief, starting at the very top with Apple. :hide:

12. THEY GOT HIM!
Cool.

ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA!

The police used my evidence (email which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up. Nice work OPD!

13. Guy advertising *Hidden* with his MacBook...
(I'm always skeptical...)

Show me the police report, ask Mr. MacBook owner if he might have "accidentally" left his laptop somewhere...

Then LMAO when smug MacBook owner gets in trouble for a silly publicity stunt and sued by Taxi guy.

If this is real, I'm sorta rooting for Taxi guy.

... and the "word" is that this is a hoax meant to sell the app.

16. So, what's to prevent the thief from, oh, just putting tape over the webcam eyehole?
poof!

There goes the ability of Hidden to take pictures.

Or... just wipe the HD and reinstall the OS.

Bye Bye hidden.

Really doesn't stop smart laptop thieves.
