Rand Paul, Supposed Defender Of Civil Liberties, Calls For Jailing People Who Attend ‘Radical Political Speeches’
By Alex Seitz-Wald on May 31, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) made headlines last week for single-handedly obstructing the renewal of the Patriot Act, calling the law an unconstitutional infringement on civil liberties. His demand to insert a series of amendments to weaken the law nearly allowed it to lapse and put the country at “risk,” but Paul said it was worth it to prevent the government from continuing to “blatantly ignor the Constitution.” But when Paul went on Fox News host Sean Hannity’s radio show Friday to discuss his opposition to the national security law, he suggested implementing a far more serious infringement on civil liberties. While discussing profiling at airports, Paul called for the criminalization of speech:

PAUL: I’m not for profiling people on the color of their skin, or on their religion, but I would take into account where they’ve been traveling and perhaps, you might have to indirectly take into account whether or not they’ve been going to radical political speeches by religious leaders. It wouldn’t be that they are Islamic. But if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, that’s really an offense that we should be going after — they should be deported or put in prison.

6. How about jailing people who are "palling around with terrorists"?
In other words, who decides what's radical. Since it's Hannity he said this too, Hannity calls everything radical if it's not Republican.

11. The gentleman lacks a certain level of acumen
Sometimes I think people running for Congress (House or Senate) should have to pass a few tests in order qualify. IQ, might be helpful, Civics, Constitution (for what that's worth), and perhaps a psychological test for sanity.

I'm joking, sort of.. I know I know... It would be unconsitutional.. but since it's just a worthless piece of paper these days, maybe we ought to consider an amendment to establish basic intelligence, and reasoning skills. at the mimimum.

12. I was under the impression
that the government has already been "overthrown" by corporate interests for a while now.

Of course, they don't want their current version to be violently overthrown since they did it slowly, smoothly and gradually with only enough violence, (covert?) to adjust certain, pesky situations along the path to victory.

Damned if they are going to let anyone ruin the perfect setup they have as they adjust public perception to give the impression that the government is anything but a representation of America Inc.

13. It would cost a LOT of $$ to gather that kind of info on people
Following them around, tracking their movements to see what "speeches" they attended, etc. And then the added cost of making that info available to the airlines and TSA.

Fiscally irresponsible.

And brain-dead stupid too.

15. Perspective is everything
"But if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, that’s really an offense that we should be going after — they should be deported or put in prison." Rand Paul R Douchebag

How about if we are listening to Bush espousing the violent overthrow of another sovereign nation?

I see! It's perfectly acceptable if we do it.

28. No surprises there

Libertarianism was created specifically to oppose socialism/communism.

All of this security state bullshit has little to do with 'radical Islamists' and everything to do with us. They know that all of this 'austerity' that they're throwing down will lead to radicalization of at least some of the populace.

They are getting ready, are we?
