After Crises, Japanese Lose Faith In Government

by Louisa Lim

June 1, 2011

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan faces a no-confidence motion in parliament over his handling of the aftermath of Japan's huge earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. Distrust of the government is mounting, especially in areas close to the stricken nuclear plant. Anger has focused on the hot-button issue of children's safety.

As she drives round Fukushima, Kayo Watanabe points out the radiation hot spots. She knows which street used by kids going to school has above-normal radiation levels, which school gutter has radiation levels 60 times higher than what is considered safe.

She has been measuring radiation levels herself for a while. She says she doubted the official line from the beginning, back in March when the very first blast happened at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant almost 40 miles away.

"We haven't believed the government from the start," Watanabe says. "When the explosion happened, they didn't say anything about it being dangerous. We don't trust the media either, since the nuclear plant operator sponsors many newspapers and television stations."

----------------------

Nuclear meltdown going on and the people are being fed feel good stories by the corporate sponsored media. The same people who caused the meltdown are going to be in charge of deciding what is reported. Keep in mind you would getting the same treatment if this was happened at a reactor near where you live right here in the US. We should be learning something here. When it comes down to the welfare of big money or saving lives big money is going to win out every time. Can't say we weren't warned.

3. She's right. GE designed and exported the plants, and now (doesn't) report on them after they
melted down.

It's the stuff that revolutions are made of. Only, it won't be televised.

6. No, I'm not wondering, I know why
It is because the milisecond it became obvious the industry would have to pull all stops to pump confidence into their dinosaur technology forced on populations, they began to do so with a vengeance. Truth and safety be damned, it's the profits that matter, stupid.

Risk of tsunami underestimated: IAEA

By KAZUAKI NAGATA
Staff writer
Japan underestimated the risks of tsunami that led to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a preliminary summary Wednesday, while pointing out the need to reinforce the independence of its nuclear regulators.

"The tsunami hazard for several sites was underestimated. Nuclear designers and operators should appropriately evaluate and provide protection against the risks of all natural hazards," reads the IAEA summary

The IAEA team of experts — which arrived in the country May 23 — visited the Fukushima Nos. 1 and 2 plants, as well as the Tokai No. 2 plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, to investigate the sites in an effort to glean lessons on nuclear safety from the ongoing crisis.

The summary hints that the government needs to review the current nuclear regulatory structure, saying the system "should ensure that regulatory independence and clarity of roles are preserved in all circumstances in line with IAEA Safety Standards."

Where do the people advertise anyway? Why should the promoters have free reign to propagandize and not the interests of those affected the most by the disaster of nuke power? Disaster Capitalism right in front of us. Money doesn't talk, it swears. Happy now?
