CASE CLOSED! CONGRESSMAN WEINER WAS FRAMED! (An important update to "The Weiner affair: Close to solution (but I need your help!)"

...............

UPDATE: Reader "milowent" took up the challenge. Without knowing my password -- without hacking into my account -- he got a third image into my Yfrog account, using the simple technique explained above. Here's the image he sent me:

Here is the image as it appears on my Yfrog account:

..............

http://www.yfrog.com/h2h0sijj

If you click on that link, you may notice something important. By using this technique, milowent (or is it Tony?) was able to create a header that does not contain the URL of the image below the account holder's name. As we've seen in previous posts, that URL does appear if the account holder uploads a picture. Apparently, it does not appear if someone else emails a picture to that account.

The screencap of Congressman Weiner's page -- the one featuring the infamous "crotch shot" -- lacks the URL. As far as I can tell, the only way to create that anomaly is when someone other than the account holder places an image on Yfrog, using the simple strategy outlined above.

The comparison image given here should explain the situation to anyone I've accidentally confused. (Click on the image to enlarge.) The first header was taken from the Weiner screen cap as it appeared on Breitbart. Note the lack of a URL beneath "RepWeiner" -- just blank space.

.................

They can now create a sex scandal narrative to bring down a very prominent liberal Democrat who also is an annoying critic of conservative power. I hope they end up eating shit on this one.

102. Sadly, that is true.
They were aware that this "scandal" was manufactured. It does not matter. They have already reported this lie to the propagandized people. No apology, no retraction, nothing can take this back. It has already been communicated and we do not have a time machine...

If the reporter was fired, prosecuted and the MSM made it clear that this was all a lie, it might HELP.

Treat this "scandal" and its messenger, the same way that they did DAN RATHER when he reported the truth.

103. There used to be a time when they would actually
investigate these things themselves. The MSM (sans a rare few out there) don't even bother. It's easier and better for the ratings to just ask over and over and over again the same question or allegation that can't be proved (yes, you Wolf).

(I don't have a Twitter acct, and couldn't tell the difference between a Tweet and a sparrow fart in hurricane...hell, I barely get Facebook!...:D )

But I would think that news org's would have people that can figure this out...easily done here, and most DU'ers don't p/u a check for doing work like this. There are legions of people in the media that should have figured this out...they get paid to be able to figure this stuff out.

Anything from Breitbart is worthless anyway. Why he hasn't been exposed as the fraud he is is beyond comprehension.

28. Think again
Remember when that guy threw his shoes at GWB? Well, I made a crappy GWB/Shoe Throw Flash game and submitted it to Wonkette. Jeanne Moos over at CNN included a video bit of someone playing that game on one of her HaHa Funny! reports. Immediately upon viewing that report and seeing my game on the screen I came to the sad conclusion that the kids at CNN were surfing the net on (at the time) a seven year-old browser, IE6. I knew this because the header image I made for that game was a png with a transparent background and IE6 is incapable of rendering the transparency in png images.

Proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLRR6rTPrfI

Long story short, "the press" is hardly computer savvy.

18. So Dan Wolfe (Patriotusa76) has been cooking this up since May 7th?
Full story - sorry could'nt find another link..

http://biggovernment.com/edulis/2011/05/31/weinergate-twitter-user-dan-wolfe-denies-hacking-accusations-welcomes-fbi-investigation/

Contrary to Stef’s report, Wolfe first tweeted about Congressman Weiner and a sex scandal on May 5th, citing a friend’s report of a right-wing blog rumor. The rumor vaguely claimed that a high-profile, northeast-region Democrat was involved in a sex scandal with photo evidence. Wolfe speculated that the politicians who fit that profile were Charles Rangel, Anthony Weiner, or Barney Frank, and he asked Weiner and Rangel one after the other multiple times if they were involved in the scandal. One of Wolfe’s final tweets on the subject on May 11th said it was his “hope” Weiner was the politician in question “if rumor is true.”

"As far as I can tell, the only way to create that anomaly is when someone other than the account holder places an image on Yfrog, using the simple strategy outlined above".

Sooooo....Yfrog has face recognition? That is, if the account holder did this on some other computer, it would know?

Second question...how do we know that this "framer" wasn't put up to doing this...either paid or unpaid...by Weiner himself?

I know I'll get asked what the motive would be for that. Do I really have to spell it out?

How about being able to send a pornographic image that couldn't be traced back to HIM...

Would a person take the chance of ruining his career or family for a cheap thrill or two?

I dunno...ask an assortment of Republicans caught in sexual adventures.

29. questions
I am not sure that Canon's conclusion about how to create the URL anomaly always holds up, but I don't know what tests he did.

The main point is that re-creating what happened to Weiner using this yfrog exploit would not be very difficult if you were able to figure out his yfrog email address. If weiner did post this himself to yfrog, it was a huge error, because yfrog is a public image site. NOt the place anyone would post a dirty pic because it would immediately be public on his images.

31. That's a pretty shaky limb you're on
Here's what I learned conducting my own experiment.

I sent an image from one of my other email accounts to the email address for my YFROG account and put @myYFROGusername in the subject line. Sure enough, the image showed up on my YFROG page and for approximately 10 seconds, no URL appeared under my YFROG username, then the page with the image refreshed and included a URL to the image.

It's not a matter of recognizing the physical presence of the person uploading the image - it's a matter of the sender knowing the email address of the YFROG account.

32. blogslut experiment
interesting. 10 seconds is pretty fast. i have been theorizing that this may happen in 3-4 minutes on average, even when you post from your email account connected to your twitter/yfrog.

in the case of weiner's tweet and canonfire's view of my yrfog posted, no URL had appeared after 20 minutes. anomaly? proof of framing? it seems that more experiments may need to be run.

...and to be frank, I didn't notice the URL showing up until I saw that it showed up on Cannonfire's YFROG page. Could have taken longer for the URL to show. I was in the middle of uploading from email/uploading straight to YFROG at the time and wasn't paying attention to the passing of minutes. It could take longer.

38. Actually my question about Yfrog not recognizing the image
of the account holder was a facetious one.

Because the OP seems to suggest that it would HAVE to be someone other than the account holder. Like the account holder couldn't do it on another computer.

So I want to know if it would be possible for the account holder to do all that on another computer without actually logging into his account. To make it look like someone else did it, you know?

I'm clueless as to how to upload a pic. But I have an idea for one. ;)

From the article above - easiest way to pull off this as a hoax would be if you knew weiner's yfrog email address. email a blackberry pic to that email address with (@subject) in text and you'd create exactly what happened here.

would require no password hacking (you wouldn't even need to know his password to do it).

the chance that somewhere along the way that weiners yfrog address had been leaked? pretty damn high. it would happen if weiner or an aide simply forwarded a pic he emailed to his yfrog account to anyone else (thus showing the yfrog email address in the chain).

@wolfblitzercnn is listed on the yfrog.

His CNN email is wolf@cnn.com

Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 12:11 AM by Oilwellian
"No, my penis is smaller and hangs to the right?" Why should Weiner give the frothing right wing a soundbite comparing his penis to the one in the photo? I can completely understand why he won't answer that question.

62. Excellent, but I fear the damage is already done...
By being unable to deny that the pic was of him, Weiner has implied that suggestive photos of him exist. While it's not a crime, and while it's nobody's business why they might exist, I'm afraid it may just be "too much information" for the average voter.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope, I hope...

After all, he's been married to this drop-dead gorgeous woman for less than a year:

It makes sense that he'd be reluctant to talk about this. He doesn't want his bride dragged into an embarrassing public scene and give everybody an unneccessary glimpse into their bedroom.

I hope the asshole who hacked Weiner's account gets it all thrown back in his face. :grr:

64. I would think that criminal charges would apply
since Twitter and yfrog have to use wireless transmission/phone/cable lines in order to transmit data.

if the account was hacked, then that's "interruption of a communique in transit", which falls under federal wiretapping statutes.

if someone stole or hacked the password and signed onto Weiner's account and impersonated him, then that's identity theft and interruption of a communique in transit.

fuckfart might well face some jailtime if it's found out that he had knowledge of this shit.

when you dig a hole for someone else, you may end up falling in it yourself.

Some charges that come to mind:

Identity Theft, Fraud, sexual harassment

Anyone know if there is a law against impersonating a congress person?

Certainly civil liability for slander and defamation

Throw the book at them and expose these slimy people to protect our political system and the average person against such tactics.

104. This is why I get so sick of these stupid "hacks" creating social media sites.
Yfrog and Twitter are nothing more than mal-formed bullshit garbage-blog sites. Everyone out there with minimal HTML skills is jumping on the social media bandwagon in it's race to the bottom thanks to the father of all internet shit, Facebook. Why any politician would create an account on one of these high-school puke-blogs is beyond me. Have some fucking common-sense for Christ sakes!

106. Are the twitter and yfrog people looking at their sendmail logs?...
Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 11:12 AM by cascadiance
Presumably after looking at the flaw that allows others from the outside to send mails to an account this way, and hopefully they have a way to track which original mail that was sending this attachment was the one used to have it posted on yfrog.

Sendmail logs and the original mail itself should have header information that would allow them to track it back to the source of who sent the mail, and to hopefully track down the owner of the mail account that sent it. If it was a Yahoo mail account for instance, they then could contact Yahoo, if they do it quickly enough (I think its around two weeks) before the raw mail logs are archived, and then they could track down the IP address of who sent the mail then and what time it was one. I know this, since I maintained this internal tool that was used at Yahoo to help the FBI track down the hacker that hacked Sarah Palin's account. I'd like to think that they could ultimately track down who sent it, but that might be where it gets harder to track down, depending on where the email account of the hacker sits. I presume he's not going to go through a traceable account like one on Yahoo to send this mail.

I'm guessing also that this is why this isn't a quick turnaround from law enforcement now coming out saying "we've caught the guy", or that "this wasn't an account hack". They are probably very busy with twitter and yfrog personnel to look at all resources available to get to the IP address of the offender and the time it was sent to try and pin down the person's identity and have proof of it.

This sort of exploit though might be harder to track down than if someone had to hit yfrog directly to "log in" and put upload the image, which presumably would have allowed yfrog to see the IP address of the computer that uploaded this photo. This will probably involve multiple companies/entities to track down the source of the mail.

Does Michael Savage have a twitter account? It would be interesting if some hacker saw how this exploit worked, and were to do the same thing to Michael Savage *Weiner*, to show how easy it would be to go after someone with a similar name, and to show how ludicrous the assumption that Weiner sent this photo himself is. I certainly wouldn't advocate doing this, as this would be breaking the law, unlike what was set up here just to test the exploit with the full knowledge of all parties involved.
