Suppose an incredibly evil person was caught torturing puppies, kittens and bunnies.

Then, in a discussion forum, some people (A, B and C) posts that an incredibly evil person was caught torturing puppies, kittens, bunnies and ponies.

Someone else (D) points out the fact that the incredibly evil person did not, in fact, torture any pony. Posts links to the police reports stating that what was found in the incredibly evil person's basement were puppies, kittens, and bunnies. Period.

Every poster in the thread jumps on person (D) for being a defender of puppy killers, kitten killers, and bunny killers.

Person (D) responds by posting photos of the incredibly evil person going to a pet zoo, petting the ponies, and smiling.

Everybody (but especially persons A and C) go ballistic, accusing (D) of being a flat-out accomplice of the incredibly evil person.

Person (D) responds by posting a photo of the incredibly evil person attending a charity event for orphan ponies and writing them a check. And smiling.

The escalation proceeds. Everybody else facepalms.

And so on.
