Lesson: Don't take compromising photos of yourself.
Even before the digital age, I knew this. Everyone I'd ever known who had taken naked pics of themselves or their SO, has had at least one story of the pics falling into the wrong hands.

I'm not a prude. I know several people who have taken nude pics (I know a lot of artists), and they generally accept that they are for public, or semi-public consumption. I also know that many other people I know have digital pics on their cameras and they would not want them to go public.

If you're an artist, model, or actor, nude pics are not likely to compromise your career. If you're in business, or a politician or teacher, you can be crucified if you misplace your smart phone. Do you really think that all those nude pics on the internet are in circulation with full consent? Yes, the majority are, but others are haunting people year after year.

My wife has a lovely body, but I have never taken a single nude picture of her. Partly because she's more cautious than I am, and partly because I know it can backfire and create a disaster.

Don't accuse me of telling you what to do. I'm not saying you can't take pics. Just know what consequences you're willing to accept before you act.

1. You'll get no argument from me!

Never put on paper (and now the internet) anything you don't want your mother, coworkers or employer to see. Do your grandchildren really need to see you having 'happy times' with their grandpa years after the fact?

2. the pic is just of some underwear, no face--why should he admit it's him?
and there's no reason as yet to believe he took photos of himself. If the account was hacked, it could be anybody's picture.

3. I don't know it was him
And he can definitely deny it and nobody could prove otherwise.

I'm not speaking only of this case, but it seems that this will be a recurring problem for a lot of people. Just be careful, folks.

9. of course, it's so clueless the way people put personal things on the web
Everyone should be careful--but since others can seemingly hack Twitter photos with ease, it's a bit like blaming the victim. Your heart is in the right place, though, Courtesy.

4. Can you explain to me (low tech, no twitter account) HOW such a pic could
fall into this guy Wolfe's hands? Say Weiner took a photo similar to the one being circulated and sent it in a joking fashion to his wife (he's a newlywed, right?). Can someone just look through any and all photos you've got on your file?

No. I can't answer that. I'm just saying there's a lesson in this.

7. Anything can be hacked into. He should know that.
If he did send that picture to his wife using email or twitter or whatever, his judgement is suspect.

13. I think that is the pertinent question, although as someone else
pointed out, the media won't care if it was for personal use or not.

19. OK, thanks suffrommich, that makes sense...
but if it WAS for personal use, why would the media care that he was sending it to his wife (and not to anyone else)? There's only a problem if he was sending it as sexual harassment or having a secret affair. The woman in question is categorically denying she ever even got it. This thing has dirty tricks written all over it and there is no proof he did anything wrong...I'm not getting why this even matters...it would be like a housemaid of Nancy Pelosi revealing that she had a vibrator in her undie drawer...

27. That sounds a bit far fetched...unless someone was doing this not for fun but for profit.
i.e., stealing/peddling a pic "someone" stole off of Weiner's cell phone. Maybe a republican mole in Weiner's office, planted there just to get stuff on him? That's the only thing that makes sense because obviously the person would have to have the PROXIMITY to Weiner's stuff in order to filch it...

5. It could be argued by some: avoid social networking altogether
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 01:53 PM by GusBob
I mean we are all hiding behind pseudonyms here ( most anyway). The poor student caught up in this fiasco seems to regret the nationwide attention, but also seems to realize its part of the game.

I know people who refuse to participate in social networks at all, besides myself, mostly business and health care professionals. In fact the AMA, I believe, has come up with guidelines for physicians and social networks, basically advising 'dont'

8. This was unrec't?
Come on now. Why?

I've had several lady friends that wanted naked pictures of me. Some even sent me pictures fo themselves. No way will I do it. I may be handsome and cute, but there are people that live to make other people's lives miserable. I have no intention of making them happy. Besides the ladies in question can see me in person.

But I'm showing my age here. Younger DUers can Google "Polaroid".

15. I'm speaking generally.
It may well not be him. But think how much worse it would be if his face were in the pic, or it could otherwise be proven to be him.

I'm not drawing conclusions about this case. I'm just saying (again!!!) that there's a lesson here.

people from doing that.

But yeah, taking nude pictures of yourself is pretty stupid.

14. Why not? In this case, even if he hasn't, they've figured out a way to make it look as if he had
so what's the point of not doing that.

they know how to undo all that effort by simply lying about you.

and people here, many, believe whatever they hear.

17. Or stop worrying so much about being naked.
What is "compromising?" I have a dick. I have an ass. As does every guy I know. All the women I know have vaginas and asses. And boobs, though some have less boobs than others. So what the hell are we so freaked out about? EVERY body has roughly the same equipment. Maybe if we weren't so hung up on being freaked out about a penis or a vagina, Anthony's wiener wouldn't be an issue.

30. Did you read my post at all?
I made it pretty clear that nude pics aren't compromising for everyone. It's foolhardy to believe it doesn't matter to people who can use it against you.

28. There are nude pics of me in digital form and that have passed through the cloud.
That said, none have my face visible or any other identifiers, so one would have some trouble concluding they are of me.
