Did Sarah Palin Just Commit Election Fraud in Arizona?
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 10:33 PM by Newsjock
Source: The Stranger

Crosscut's Arizona bureau chief Ted van Dyk was in Prescott, AZ over Memorial Day weekend, where he may have gotten a bigger scoop than he realizes. According to van Dyk, none other than Sarah Palin made an appearance Friday night at Prescott's historic Courthouse Square, and it sure does sound like Palin crossed the line from electioneering to election fraud:

A friend of ours, the insurgent/reform candidate for mayor, running against the good-ole-boy GOP incumbent, approached Palin and asked that she sign her mayoral petititon.

Palin did so (even though, as a non-resident, her signature would of course be disqualified).

As Darryl at my alma mater HA points out, Palin's signature would not just be disqualified, it would be illegal.

2. Most places I know, an illegal signature is the same as disqualified.
It is not, hyperbole aside, an actual crime. Or everyone who ever gathered signatures would be arrested.

4. Class 1 misdemeanor
Here it is…under title 16 of the Arizona Revised Statutes:

16-1020. Signing of petitions; violation; classification

A person knowingly signing any name other than his own to a nomination petition or a petition for formation, alteration or dissolution of a special district (...) or who is not at the time of signing a qualified elector entitled to vote at the election initiated by the petition, is guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor.

11. i find it a bit nasty for you to say bitching about it here on DU does nothing.
This is a place where we hold public debate, and learn quite a bit. It is a discussion. SAying that is not valid because the person did not take a certain acton (which in this particular case would be a total waste of time becuase no sec of state would give a damn) is, imho rude. I don't know you, but I think discussing things on DU is one way we become aware, and sometimes because of that awareness DO take action. So I take offense with the way you spoke to the poster.
