Woman posts Facebook suicide note, takes pills, "friends" stand by and do nothing
Obviously, social network friends are no substitute for real friends. And I say that as someone who has a FB account.

1. The only people I have as friends on facebook
are people I accually know. I will never understand people who just friend everyone.

3. same here. I may not be bff with every single person
but there's some kind of real world connection. I can point to everyone on my list and explain how I know them.

27. Me too
Most of them are real friends, family, or ex students of mine from years ago. They are people that I actually care about knowing what is going on in their lives.

13. It's networking
I have friended teachers from all across the country. We share professional literature and compare many issues across states and districts.

I have friended many peace activists as well.

There are a lot of people who use FB for networking and reasons other than just talking to RL friends.

26. Same here. For the most part, I only FB-friend people I've met in meat-space.
That does wonders to keep the doucheyness-level down to tolerable levels.

2. Just having thousands of virtual "Friends" is pretty much a cry for help
It's Hoarder mentality

14. That is only true if said person is not playing the clicky clicky games
on FB. You need a million 'friends' for those clicky clicky games. Also, if the person continuously drops 'friends' and still has a zillion then they are not a hoarder.

4. Instead of posting on FB she should have called her Mom.
We don't know the details here. Sure, there are obviously people who are assholes who mocked her suicide note, but what does she expect? If someone got on DU and posted a suicide note half of the responses would be mocking the person.

6. It's hard to know if this is the first time she made such a post, too.
How many times did she rehearse, including posting to FB? It could be that her "friends" thought she was making just another GCW post and she'd be back as usual tomorrow.

10. Up until a year or so ago I would disagree with your DU remark.
I think most here would be concerned and put an alert in case the info on file could contact that individual. There have been times in the past when we have had folks giving a cry for help. Too bad if we wouldn't help today.

22. Nah, such a note would be deleted by the mods here on DU..
But before that some people would react in a negative manner and some would try to help as they could.

7. this is why I don't facebook--not
that I'm going to harm myself, but I don't need to count in the thousands "friends" when I have about 20 true friends who are reachable by phone, a knock on the door, or a quick text.

9. I've actually seen people rally around someone in trouble on Facebook.
Edited on Wed Jan-05-11 04:45 PM by Warren DeMontague
To the point of contacting authorities for someone making vaguely concerning posts.

Facebook should not be construed as anything to replace a genuine support network for someone in crisis, but I can't help but laugh at the almost reflexive clucking and grumbling that takes place any time there is a story even remotely connected with facebook.

Yes, someone, somewhere had terrible gas, and facebook was powerless to intervene! See! I told you facebook was the problem!

12. Facebook is the new AOL IM chatrooms.
And like AOL, it will pass in time as well. On Facebook, you can have a 'friend' next door or on the otherside of the world.

25. It's just more "get offa my lawn"-style anti-tech nonsense.
"Ya know, back in my day, kids played outside! And they didn't sit around playing video games and watching rap videos all day! Damn modern contraptions!"

(And they also died of polio and weren't allowed to eat at the same lunch counter with black people.)

I don't like facebook, but to act like it's seriously turning us all into heartless monsters completely disconnected from reality is profoundly fucking stupid.

18. Been very lucky to have met and become good friends with some FB folks...
actually, I "met" them on another forum years ago but we reconnected on FB. Sweetest bunch of ladies you'd ever meet. We are housewives, single women, businesswomen, etc. If I ever fell into the abyss and let out a warning beforehand, there's no doubt in my mind if they knew they'd do something.

28. DU peeps :)
For years I've known on FB the nicest bunch of DU people. They may not be actual-real-life save-me-from-suicide friends but we care a lot about each other, like every day. I bet I'll know some of them for a long time, I hope to.

People are just Haters. Haters gotta hate

21. I don't have a FB account
but years ago I did help save a life over AOL.

Kid and I were talking over the PM and kid said something about tired of living and he had taken pills.

So to make a long story short, training kicked in and I got as much info as I could, and called my 9,11 service, who got me in contact with a 9.11 across the country...

News paper wanted to make a big deal out of it. I did my job... I wasn't interested.
