Yet another evil cop story: Phoenix police savagely beat Latino paralyzed by polio.
Reason #6730672 why police have become a cancer upon America.

This is the sort of shit we get when we let subhumans like Joe Arpaio in positions of leadership...

Impossible, Polio Victim Tells Phoenix Cops

PHOENIX (CN) - After Tasering, kicking and hitting a man in the head with flashlights while calling him a "wetback," Phoenix police officers falsely accused him of assaulting them and running away, but the man can't fight or run at all because he is paralyzed on one side of his body from childhood polio, he says in a civil rights complaint.

Refugio Rodriquez sued the city, Maricopa County, Maricopa County Correctional Health Services and the three Phoenix police officers he says assaulted him in the parking lot of a church.

Rodriquez, whom the officers accused of aggravated assault against a police officer after they Tasered, kicked and hit beat him with police-issued flashlights, says he could not have assaulted the officers or run because the left side of his body is paralyzed from polio.

...

After Rodriquez was released on bail, his wife took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where the emergency doctor told him that "he could have died because a blood clot near his brain was beginning to develop," the complaint states.

1. I don't get what the original arrest was supposed to be for.
Are they really claiming a 5'5 140lb man paralyzed on half of his body assaulted the officers for no reason and then ran away?

2. According to the Phoenix NewTimes, he was "damaging the building"

Sounds like a load of bullshit if you ask me. They also lied about a half-paralyzed man who walks with a cane "running from the cops" and "resisting arrest."

The pigs decided to rough him up because he was brown and it was after dark.

Utter redneck subhuman savages.

3. This is sick.
Rodriguez was then taken to the Fourth Avenue Jail, where an intake nurse told him she was going to have him taken by ambulance to the hospital because of the severity of his injuries. However, Rodriquez claims, {the nurse came back a few minutes later and told him "if she sent him to the hospital emergency, she was told she would lose her job."

After he was released on bail, Rodriquez was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where the emergency doctor told him he "could have died because a blood clot near his brain was beginning to develop,"

How are they going to ignore the medical professional and deny treatment after beating him half to death? Rodriguez should get a 7 figure settlement and those thugs need to lose their badges and serve jail time.

4. Typical
I have no respect whatsoever for 90% of cops. The vast majority are goons trying to compensate for their obvious shortcomings.

5. I'm not sure that's true.
In my nape of the forest, we have four sets of cops:

a) state police (almost never seen)
b) Cook County Sheriffs (either in courts, forest preserves or county accident or murder sites0
c) Big city police (chicago)
d) suburb police.

For the most part, state police are professional, calm, and rarely get into trouble.
Cook County sheriffs deal with the scum of the universe. From wife beaters to parole jumpers, from kiddie rapists, to drugged up murderers, from catholic priests to drunk drivers. I know many of them, and they are all pretty fair, well trained, careful people. They have a few nuts in their midst, but, they do their best to keep them under control.
Chicago cops are well trained, hardened, hard nosed, folks who have to face drug lords, gang bangers, and nuts on the street, each and every day. I know many of them, too. Each one may be rough around the edges, but they take no shit from anyone, nor do they hand it out unless it is a matter of life and death.

Suburb cops? Whew, different story. I am lucky that my local force is polite, friendly, helpful, and keeps my town and area safe and sound. Sure, they set up seatbelt and DUI traps on some big intersections, but frankly, after the drunk hit us at 60 mph, I'd like to see more of that. Good people.

But, a couple of suburbs to the west, slightly north, and it is a whole different ballgame. If you like shiny cars, with lots of lights, if you want to carry a baton, a big gun, and push people around, AND if state, county, city, and other police refused to employ you, boy did you find a comfy home. I am not the only person who deliberately strikes a path around those suburbs, just to stay away from those assholes. There aren't many police forces that bad in Illinois, but I can name three that deserve federal investigations.

The vast majority are doing their jobs. You may not like the result, but I doubt you can imagine what it is to walk a beat, thinking that there's a big bull's eye on your back, in certain parts of the City.

11. My last experience with suburban cops was a nightmare
Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 10:47 AM by hifiguy
I was, at the time, working for an attorney who practiced out of his home in a VERY upper crust area. I had been working for the guy, and driving the same route every day, for months. Being of extremely limited means, the car I drove to work every day was a rather tatty looking late 1990s Nissan. One day I was pottering along, under the speed limit, seatbelt fastened, and was pulled over by a crewcut macho swellhead young cop (I am in my early 50s) who was rude and abusive to begin with. It got worse. He yelled at me, spittle flying, asking who the hell I thought I was and if I knew why I'd been pulled over. I hadn't a clue.

Turns out, my plate had been run, for no reason as I wasn't speeding and was obeying all the traffic laws, and a supposedly unpaid ticket turned up on my record. I had to park my car at a nearby gas station and checked into the matter when I got to work. There had been a snafu regarding a ticket I had received several months earlier, but the ticket had in fact been paid. Fine. I immediately paid the (unjustly given) ticket I received for supposedly having an outstanding unpaid ticket.

Three weeks later I am pulled over again in EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT by the Minnesota version of a southern cop. Older guy who wouldn't listen to anything. Claimed that I hadn't paid the ticket that I HAD ALREADY PAID that I had received from the prior stop and that my license was immediately suspended for an indefinite period. This asshole upped the ante considerably by impounding my car. It took me two months to raise the money to get the car out of a lot more than twenty miles from my home - and it ran over $800.

The long and the short of it was that I finally got a court date. I went in to court, told the prosecutor my side of the story, and that there was no reason whatsoever for me to be there other than to get my wrongly suspended license cleared. She said "yeah, sure. I have to check this out." She went over to the court clerk and pulled up my record. I heard the clerk say to her "there is absolutely no reason for this guy to be here. He's clean on everything." The prosecutor came back to me, somewhat abashed, apologized for the foulup (which was intentional on the part of the cops - the prosecutor tacitly admitted this to be true) and gave me the paperwork necessary to get my license back.

My one and only real offense?

Driving an older car with rust spots in a fancy neighborhood.

Suburban cops are a collection of assholes, motherf*uckers and goons that should be behind bars themselves.

In the very few encounters I have had with Minneapolis cops, all of them have been professional and reasonably courteous. But I am a middle-aged white male. I suspect that my interactions with them would have been quite different if I were young and African-American, Native, or Latino.

12. a black atty friend of mind still smarts for his own
constant problems, including arrests for driving while black. Get this: HE'S A PROSECUTOR. He's the only kind of attorney that cops actually talk to. And he gets pulled over repeatedly?

I tried a case against him last month and he was mentioning during a break, that it happened yet again.

Those three suburbs have rumors floating around, that if you are female, with big, tits, you best bring your own condoms. Just to be safe, in case of a police stop. There are some seriously nasty, disturbed, and angry assholes on those forces.

but driving while rusty? That's a new one.

13. It was and is a very expensive lakefront area
in the western suburbs of the Twin Cities. The only rusty cars that are on those streets belong to "the help" and are thus obvious targets for shitheel suburban cops who spend most of their time bullying kids for throwing keg parties while Mummy and Daddums are at the Florida house.

The guy I worked for was a real tool to boot. Couldn't pay me on time about once per quarter but always had the money to cover th (enormous) tuition payments for his youngest at Falwell's diploma mill.

7. Doctors do the same thing, so do GOP pols,
teachers, firemen, and more.

Each profession, career, job, union, position has its share of unmitigated assholes making a whole bunch more seriously good people look bad.

But, I am reminded of being beware of getting what you ask for. Remember Sir Doug Adams' hitchhiker's trilogy? And that great ship filled with useless ninnies, which unfortunately led to the collapse of the society that sent them away because of a telephone virus?
