Would Mitt Romney be running for president if he was short, overweight and bald?
Edited on Thu Jun-02-11 10:55 AM by Cyrano
IMO, the reason that many think Romney can be elected is because he "looks presidential." Shallowness, thy name is America.

Even so, he has some things going against him. He passed a sane health care program when he was governor of Massachusetts. Tea Baggers hate him for that.

He's a Mormon who wears "magic underwear." Many "Christians" will never vote for a Mormon.

He's flipped-flopped on virtually every issue imaginable in order to fall in line with the current lunatics who vote in Republican primaries. Independent voters won't ignore this.

But back to my original point. Does anyone really believe that Romney would be in the running if he looked like George Costanza? Be honest. You know the answer to that question.

1. Looks have a lot to do with it; we haven't had a homely President since Nixon.

selected Warren Burger as his nominee for Chief Justice of the SCOTUS was that he "looked like a judge should look."

9. Of course not.
But then, with all the other negatives you mentioned, he's probably still unelectable. He might not even get the repub nomination.

Obama was tall, fit, good looking and athletic. And of course it didn't hurt that Obama could get out a coherent sentence that could inspire people. McCain never stood a chance.

19. Your question was, "would he be running?"
Yes...as McCain did.

McCain didn't lose because he was short, bald, and frail. He had half the country convinced Obama was a muslim terrorist and he still couldnt win...but he did run.

But they did have an open relationship. I used to see them picking up guys at the Man Hole in Chicago.

14. You do need a full head of hair to become President, on this media age.
You can probably get away with being somewhat overweight. Short is definitely not a deal-breaker though, you just hang around with even shorter people. Michael Douglas is very short, and he was President. In a movie, I know, but still.

24. FDR's condition was pretty well disguised...
Roosevelt was very rarely photographed while sitting in his wheelchair, and his public appearances were choreographed in such a way as to avoid having the press cover his arrival and departure at public events which would have involved his having to get in or out of a car. When possible, his limousine was driven into a hotel’s parking garage for his arrivals and departures. Likewise, when traveling by train as he often did, Roosevelt often appeared on the rear platform of the presidential railroad car the Ferdinand Magellan. When he boarded or disembarked, the private car was sometimes shunted to an area of the railroad yard away from the public for reasons of security and privacy

I suspect that's one of the reasons Mitch Daniels decided not to run. He seems to fit two of the three conditions.
