Things to Remember as talking points begin to fly. (kinda long)
Edited on Sun Jun-05-11 12:30 PM by Trey9007
I'm thinking since the GOP has finally gotten their POTUS candidate field together, we're going to start hearing more hot air from the right. Keep these little tid bits in mind, when you listen to Repuke candidates talk about their favorite topics.

Big Government: We all know the GOP has gained alot of power on the federal and state level. They gained this power by campaigning on small government. But lets take a look at some things:

Under Bush and the Republican Congress, the size of Government grew the most since WWII, when they created Dept of Homeland Security.

Florida - Governor now will drug test all state workers and anyone who wants financial assistance. Anyone, except businesses who get state grants or tax cuts. Even if the state has no reason to believe the person is on drugs.

Michigan - Governor now has the power to 'APPOINT' someone to go in and take over a city government. This appointed person is not an elected official. Yet, they have the power to basically strip ELECTED officials of their power and run their city.

GOP in Congress and at the state level, have passed bills involving the government in every pregnancy in the country. In Indiana, the GOP passed a bill that requires Doctors read a script, written by the government, to abortion patients. Now remember who said "we dont want government between you & your doctor".. what a joke.

Economy/taxes:

Most, if not all, of the GOP candidates who were Governors raised taxes. Some raised state fees in lieu of raising taxes.

The ban in the Gulf only effected 1% of the rigs.

Although no Republican in Congress voted for the Stimulus bill and claim the bill created "not ONE job", 100's of them requested and received stimulus money for their districts. In their requests for money, as well as at ribbon cutting ceremonies, they mention all the jobs their projects created.

GOP house passed HR 3, which raised taxes on certain health care companies. All Repukes that were present, voted for the bill.

By this time in Reagan's 1st term, he had signed 2 bills that raised taxes , with a 3rd one signed in July. All 3 tax hikes were during a recession and effected all tax brackets. They were needed to ease the budget deficit.

NAFTA:

Most of NAFTA was negotiated under the GOP. Negotiations started under Reagan in 1986, continued under Bush I, was ratified under Clinton in Dec. 1993 only because BUSH I failed in his attempt to fast track it before he left office. Clinton got in office Jan. 1993 and was able to negotiate some worker and environmental protections in the agreement. So, NAFTA was negotiated for about 7 years. The Dem POTUS accounted for about 11 months of those negotiations.

NAFTA (the actual agreement) was signed by George H Bush in Dec. 1992.

More Repukes than Dems voted for NAFTA.

Unemployment:

At this point in Reagan's 1st term, unemployment was at 10.1%. When Reagan took office Unemployment was at 7.5%. When Obama took office unemployment was at 7.8%. The current rate is 9.1% and it has been as low as 8.8%.

Keep these facts in mind as you listen to those who spew GOP talking points.

1. Rick Perry hasn't declared yet.
It would be interesting if he sat out the early primaries and built some sort of southwest strategy.
