Patti Labelle sued over airport attack.
Source: Guardian

Singer Patti LaBelle has been accused of ordering an attack on a man who was standing near her luggage. Twenty-three-year-old Richard King was waiting outside George HW Bush intercontinental airport in Houston, Texas when LaBelle allegedly rolled down her window and "gave a command to her bodyguards" to confront him.

King, who is a student at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, claims he was walking outside the airport on 11 March, talking to his brother on a mobile phone. He wandered into the passenger pickup area, near LaBelle's limousine. "Apparently, defendant LaBelle believed King was standing too close to her luggage, even though he was oblivious to her presence and the danger he was in," the lawsuit states. "LaBelle lowered the window of her limousine and gave a command to her bodyguards. They sprang into action ... LaBelle is hot-tempered ... was a full participant in the cruel attack on King. She ordered it, and never tried to stop it."

In a video released by King's lawyers, the young man can be seen talking with LaBelle's security. One of these men chest-bumps King, who responds with a push. Two men and one woman surround King, pushing and punching him; he falls against a concrete pillar, attempting unsuccessfully to rise before stumbling away. King was reportedly sent by ambulance to hospital; he was diagnosed with concussion. "He didn't know who Patti LaBelle was, she's not in his generation," King's lawyer told the Philadelphia Inquirer. King is now suing LaBelle, three of her entourage, a taxi dispatcher and the airport for unspecified actual and punitive damages.

3. the attorney is right....
Patti LaBelle is so last century...why does she even need body guards to begin with? As if anyone is really trying to get to her. As if. Not discounting her small number of hits or great talent, but she's ancient news.I hope Mr. King wins a handsome settlement.

8. I thought she was a great talent until
I saw a special many years ago that featured LaBelle and Cindy Lauper. Cindy literally sang her into the ground with twice the vocal range and many times the talent. LaBelle could not vocally even keep up with her on the same song!

9. "so last century?"
Not that I'm a Patti LaBelle fan or anything, but just to note, if you're over 11 years old, you're last century.

5. I have to ask, "Who the hell is Patti LaBelle?"
"Snooki"
"Naomi Campbell"
...now "Patti LaBelle"

Names I've read on DU over the past week.

Names that don't mean a thing to me, but must to other people.

I'll have to do some research...

10. If the report is true...
... a civil suit is the least of her problems. She could very well be held responsible for the attack as if she conducted it personally, given that the perps were on her payroll and the incident occurred right under her nose making deniability moot.

12. I used to like Patti LaBelle but...
...that changed after 9/11. There was a ceremony for the victims on 9/12 in front of our city hall and Patti LaBelle sang the National Anthem. She sang it in full-on diva mode with trills and runs and high notes. It was terribly inappropriate. At a time like that the National Anthem should be sung not performed.

14. Cadet sues over alleged attack
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 09:38 AM by SecularMotion
HOUSTON -- A West Point cadet and former Army football player is suing veteran R&B diva Patti LaBelle, saying she ordered her bodyguards to beat him up as he waited for a ride home outside a Houston airport terminal.

The lawsuit alleges the cadet, Richard King, was waiting for his brother and father to pick him up outside one of the terminals at Bush Intercontinental Airport on March 11, when three of LaBelle's bodyguards attacked him. King was in Houston, his hometown, while on spring break from West Point.

http://www.berkshireeagle.com/entertainment/ci_18213282

"Houston police reported the incident to West Point, which suspended King for at least one year and ordered he go on active duty."

"According to a police report, King smelled of alcohol at the time of the incident. While his lawyer confirmed King had consumed a few drinks on his flight to Houston, he claimed he was not impaired."

Not sure King is completely innocent from these reports.

It remains unlawful to beat up intoxicated people.

What do any of the reports say which suggests that the bodyguards were legitimately acting in defense of any person or property?

20. Celebrity worship
This whole thing stinks but what really got me was the cop with his arm around LaBelle having his picture taken. He sure should be disciplined. And what difference does it make if he smelled of alcohol? I never like LaBelle as she is the Queen of Screech.
