So what does Anthony Weiner do now?
http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/

There's a school of thought that it's a mistake for a politician caught in a sex scandal to resign. Sure, life is hell for a few days -- or even for a few weeks -- and it seems like the media will never stop covering you, but then ... they eventually do. The scandal doesn't exactly disappear, but other stories and other controversies slowly overtake it until it starts to feel like old news. Eliot Spitzer and David Vitter were essentially guilty of the same thing, but only one of them resigned on the spot. The other was reelected -- with ease -- three years later.

Thus, you could make a strong argument that Anthony Weiner ought to resist any impulse to give up his congressional seat now that embarrassing photos he took of himself and apparently sent to women online have emerged. After all, he could probably win reelection his seat representing New York's 9th District next year (unless it is carved up in redistricting, as some suspect it will be) and well into the future, even after this.

But you could also make a strong argument that he should -- and very possibly will -- pack it in. Consider that Weiner has really only been using his congressional seat for two reason: (1) To position himself to run for mayor of New York City; and (2) To play the role of wisecracking, Republican-bashing cable news all-star. (Reason No. 2 is related to Reason No. 1 -- Weiner's decision to exploit cable news was part of his effort to expand his outerborough base in New York to include liberals in Manhattan and Brownstone Brooklyn.) And now, he can't do either of those things.

1. If you want to believe the bullshit, then that is your right.
So far, I've only seen evidence that this was a setup and no real pictures of Weiner exist.

4. We appear to have crossed that line in the last couple hours.
It looks like real pictures exist.

If the text of the reported messages are even half right... it also looks like he's a cheating perv.

A cheating perv with exceptional politics... and apparently less than an ounce of common sense.

The lord gave men a p@nis and a brain... and only enough blood to operate one at a time.

12. Looks like real pictures and actual unaltered pictures are two different
things. Keep believing the bullshit, it helps the GOP advance their agenda that much faster.

There will never be any authentic pictures presented as evidence...the source is a known liar and crook.

19. Sorry. I've been on your side of the spin and gotten burned.
John Edwards was the last time I was willing to just assume that a politician I liked was not a scumbag in his personal life. I was burned badly assuming that he was telling us the truth.

I didn't post anything on the subject (apart from clarifying questions re: how twitter works) because I also don't want to jump to conclusions regarding a solid politician - and because I could see that anyone who expressed anything but blind support was thrown to the wolves as in league with breitbart...

...but as I said - we've crossed that line now. I won't go down with his sinking ship.

And last week was the "jump the gun" point.

We've passed that now... or will very shortly.

37. Larry Flint has offered large sums multiple times in the past for sex scandals against republicans
The fact that he's slimmy and his sources have all the incentive in the world to make things up does not change the fact that some republicans were there to catch.

I don't like the tactics or the people involved... but that doesn't mean that Weiner is innocent. His behavior since the original claim has oozed guilt. Breitbart can't control how Weiner responds.

So no... it's not just "what Breitbart tells us".

39. From the WaPost
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 03:01 PM by FBaggins
"ABC News is now “likely” to name a woman who says she received a picture of a bare-chested Anthony Weiner, a source close to the network says, taking the latest twist in this tale out of the realm of Breitbart and into that of the major news outlets.

...snip...

But the Times notes that ABC has now interviewed the woman, and the source close to the network tells me it’s getting close to publishing some pictures and the woman’s identity. It’s unclear how definitive ABC will be about whether the photos were definitely sent by the Congressman to the woman. Weiner’s office has gone quiet on the latest round of stories."

I doubt that Weiner will let it go that far.

Breitbart's goal is to destroy him politically. That may have been accomplished.

29. Sure he would.
With the first pic he could shrug it off with the standard "not going to waste the people's time with this nonsense" line. With the current accusations, if it was "disinfo," he most certainly would hold a press conference to rebut the allegations.

I'll keep my fingers crossed... but it sure feels like the bottom of the ninth with the home team down by five.

2. "The 2013 mayor's race is almost certainly out now"

I'm not so sure about Salon's assertion on this one. New York City is not Provo, or even Albany for that fact of matter.. There's kind of a blase attitude toward politicians' sexual misadventures.

Limbaugh can have a radio show. Safire can do whatever he does. And Weiner can't have a cable show? Doesn't make sense to me.

10. I think he should wave his hands around madly and
go into an utter panic. Yes, sir. When Breitbart and Radar Online have the story, its all over for you. When DUers are clamoring for you to resign, over a photo of you with a couple of kitties and one of you without a shirt, it's time to panic and give it all up. Yes, indeed...

Feh! Unrecced for falling for nonsense and spreading it further. For shame!

18. He should sue Breitbart
Even if any of this garbage is true, a lawsuit would help uncover who is behind these thugs, and if I were ever a target of their visciousness, I would make it a mission to expose what they most want to hide, 'who is funding them'. And if it took a lawsuit to do that, then that's what I would do.

I don't believe anything that has the word 'breitbart' attached to it. But if he had an affair, he has nothing to worry about. Who in Congress, especially on the Republican side, has not?

21. If this relates to being hacked, etc
It is time for him to turn this over to real authorities for investigation rather that use his private firm. This is building up, and the best way to circumvent the news is to attack it head on and say Law Enforcement has started an investigation.

30. Correct on all things you said.
This could be costly with no effective response. I know many feel it is beneath them to respond to scurrilous accusations, unfounded, and possibly from photoshopped photos and computer generated chat scripts which can be easily manufactured. The problem here is that he has not turned this over to proper authorities as we await his private security firm findings. This becomes fodder and damage will be done in the interim. Just my humble opinion.
