Anthony Weiner Can Stay As Long As He Wants To.
His limit will be his own capacity to withstand the focus, ridicule and embarrassment from his family, friends and the public. He can and most likely would get reelected. But, beyond his district, his upward trajectory has been castrated. Even though he is from New York, one of the least prudish places in the USA, he will never be Mayor, Governor or Senator.

He is like our courageous Barney Frank. 25 years ago, an openly gay Congressman would be thought unlikely at best. His local district did and continues to reelect Barney. Barney perseveres as a Congressman, but due to limits, not qualifications or policy, was never elected to a higher office.

Anthony Weiner, you are today as high as you will go, on the same day as your lowest of lows.

1. No he can't. He can stay until January 2013.
New York losses two seats in redistricting and the two parties need to compromise because neither hold the reins in the process.

The compromise is now pretty obvious.

2. You may have a point there. I'll not be surprised if you turn out to be correct.
And I do like Weiner as a lawmaker. That's why I'm so angry with him. He has great political sense in the arena of directing policy. Common sense, it would appear he lacks.

3. New York City or New York State?
I looked at his district when I found about this. He is representing a highly densely populated urban area that spans Brooklyn and Queens. Even if his district got carved up, he'd probably still be OK.

5. State.
Of course cities don't have congressional redistricting roles.

They don't have to carve it up much... Just draw him in with another safe Congressional Democrat.

4. He may be redistricted out of office soon. He may not raise enough money to run again.

7. Well... he only needs money if another Democrat primaries him.
And I certainly wouldn't discount the possibility.

But I don't think there's a Republican who can beat him even if he only raises a nickle. He won by more than twenty points in a very red year. The last time that he wasn't essentially unopposed he won by more than twice that.

8. How does it happen that a Baggins so far from the Shire?
Just curious about the Padres icon. I'm in San Diego, and there are not a lot of fans outside the home town. I consider this, San Diego, my favorite city in the world, my shire.

9. If they had any money they would have the best baseball team in the league.
It's been over a decade, but I remember reading a poll of professional baseball players re: where they would most like to play (if salary weren't an object) and the overwhelming plurality said San Diego.

Do you know how many rainouts they've had in the last 20 years or so? You can probably count them on one hand.

Why the Padres for me? The same reason as for most sports fans I suppose. That's where I lived when I first started following sports decades ago. Randy Jones... Rollie Fingers... Dave Winfield... Nate Colbert. Years where the only team they could beat was the Astros with their weird uniforms.

Haven't been back in over 30 years... but I'll occasionally catch a game when they head east.

10. Well please come back, enjoy the town. We miss you.
It really is a special place. Today it was 68 degrees and so unbelievably clear, crisp and beautiful I can't even begin to do it justice. We had a "cold" front sweep in from Alaska-ish and the air was washed clean like a winter storm except it was June. Not a cloud in the sky, stunning.
