We have a chance to turn the reading of the Constitution on it's head
by all showing up alongside teabaggers to demonstrate in solidarity behind this one issue. What if gay people showed up downtown carrying signs that said yes--"We the People', Latinos showed up 'We the people...", women showed up "We the people...", unions showed up "We the people', and veterans showed up "We the people....' homeless people showed up "We the people..."

We make fun of teabaggers, their misspelled signs and their bigotry, but this is one issue that we can join them on, they wouldn't like it, but if we turned up and backed them up ON THIS ONE ISSUE, we would totally mess up the press talking points. They would not know what to do.

We look ridiculous making fun of anyone downtown standing behind the Constitution, however they interpret it. WE have FEW chances to be heard, and THIS is it, people.

SOLIDARITY is our only chance to fight the corporations---they do not wish it. If teabaggers have been allowed downtown to demonstrate with no one is calling them terrorists- us showing up under the same issue should be safe too!!

3. Not a bad idea - they are attempting to claim the Constitution as just theirs,
as they successfully did with the flag. (There is something very very wrong with Senator Kerry, who served under the flag, having to eloquently defend the Democrats' right - in both 2004 and 2008 - to the flag as equal to the Republicans.)

Now, the Republicans, who want to eliminate at least 2 amendments and add a new one, are claiming that they uniquely are consistent with the thoughts of the forefathers. Even if that were true, and it isn't, the founders specifically designed the Constitution as a living document that could be amended. They initiated the process that the right now questions.

I was listening to some of the hate radio yesterday - and it was shameful in its claims that the liberals neither knew or cared about the Constitution. Your proposal is brilliant as it does not concede the Constitution to them.

PM me, I am a good artist (that can spell LOL), I have cancer but I will go downtown with someone, or people---and we need someone with a camera. My health is really not good, I can go if I have a ride.

Edited to add- I just have limited energy, but I can walk around for a couple of hours.

the Constitution on the floor of the Senate.

The Repugs are known for saying one thing and doing completely the opposite under the cover of the first thing they said. I'm sure that this Constitution stunt is the same MO. We all should be ready to pounce on them the minute they do something or say something that doesn't quite match up with the Constitution.

6. A giant K&R
This goes for all congress folks as well. They need to be in the chamber right along side of the R's It is on a first come first serve basis for those who wish to read. The Dems need to flood the floor.

7. "GOP reading of the constitution could cost Americans $1 million"
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/01/report-house-gops-constitution-reading-could-cost-over-1-million.php

This is the media's attempt to ridicule the reading of the Constitution, as if we don't pay congressional salaries every day. The chumps.

8. Would be funny as Hell
Except we would be supporting a document that they know was not written with most of American people of today in mind. That's why they are reading it. To insult the people.

11. Who cares what they think
It is what we think that is the point of demonstrating. We cannot define ourselves by what they think.

13. Then the point will be missed!!!!
To do as they do means we are not different. To stand beside them will seem as though we are with them. They will interpret it as their very familiar saying The American People. We will not be defined as WE THE PEOPLE!!! Just a point of view based on the behavior of the repugs and the MSM.

14. I think if gay people stood next to them
Edited on Thu Jan-06-11 10:25 AM by felix_numinous
as well as people of color, unions, and progressives--we have a chance to CHANGE THE MESSAGE. I do see what you are saying, but at some point we have to push our message onto them, whether they want to hear it or not.

The MSM can always be expected to distort to their advantage. We have the netroots, YouTube and this is how we make the news, we control the message. There are two Americas right now, the sources of truth and then there is the distortion.

It is time we get in the driver's seat and stop allowing others to define us.

16. This is what my point is trying to validate.
I do believe we should control our own message. But it starts with us. We must talk, think, act and spend differently. We must start by not letting them nickname pieces of legislation. We must stop letting them control the tone of conversations. We must ask the questions of the opposition that they can and will not answer. We must target Media outlets when they do not report the news!!!!!All I am saying is that you are on the right track. We just must figure out which train we want to ride and if we want to ride together. Great minds sometimes fail. But with failure you can learn success.Keep on thinking that how we get started!!!!!! You will always have a support network with me. Good luck

12. We are taking this idea and running with it
-let them mock us, let the media mock the reading, that does not matter.

'WE THE PEOPLE ..."' not "WE THE CORPORATIONS......'

15. The veterans draping the American flag over Westboro
changed the message, and people have showed up against Nazi demonstrations to change their message. I am not advocating a confrontation, but pointing out how powerful a few people can be. I look sort of like a hippy (hair down to my ass) , not a teabagger, so me being there would probably be a contrast of sorts.
