Woman loses job over tweet
Tweet costs Pa. development agency worker her job

An economic development agency has let one of its employees go over a Twitter post that suggested her colleagues knock off work early to play golf.

Social media specialist Vanessa Williams lost her job with the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp. after she used the agency's official Twitter account on Friday to tweet: "We start summer hours today. That means most of the staff leave at noon, many to hit the links. Do you observe summer hours? What do you do?"

-----------------------------

"I think this is an interesting lesson for all of us about the use of social media and about how chatty and how much information goes out there immediately and what the consequences are," said Mitman, calling the tweet "out of line."

He said the agency does allow workers to leave early on Fridays, but only if they've already worked 40 hours. No one left early on Friday, he noted.

1. In politics that is known as a "gaffe"...
Basically defined as inadvertently telling the truth.

3. Seems pretty innocuous
IT's not like she was gossiping about a co worker or complaining about the management.

What's the point of having an official Twitter account?

5. I'm just a caveman
But if he acknowledges that they actually do allow their employees to leave early on Fridays, what's the fireable offense here?

6. I don't see what's wrong with her comment
Lot's of places allow summer hours, we do, it's one of the few perks left after shrubbo's great economic experiment blew up in our faces.

If they do summer hours they leave early on Friday's while making up the hours through the rest of the week. She said nothing about them taking off without doing a full work week.

You've got to watch what you put out on social media but it's a big overreach to assume she meant anything disrespectful or incorrect with this. Maybe they were just looking for an excuse to get rid of her.

7. As an EAP counselor I told some of my clients to call in sick and do something enjoyable.
After telling them, "It's just a job, not your life." Some people take their work waaaaay too seriously.
