2 people die as bear flies through SUV
Source: CNN

A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities said.

Police in Quebec said a 300-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by an eastbound Pontiac Sunfire. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of a westbound Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, regional police spokesman Officer Martin Fournel said.

"It was a 300-pound bullet," he said.

The SUV's 35-year-old female driver and a 40-year-old man sitting behind her were killed; a 28-year-old front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, Fournel said. In the Pontiac, neither the driver, a 23-year-old man, nor his 19-year-old male passenger was hurt.

Goes on to say no sign of alcohol or otherwise-impaired driving. Just really, really awful luck.

5. But, if bears were outlawed......
only outlaws would have bears.

I don't know what that means.

17. Colbert should know about this. He's on to bears and their evil, anti-society ways.

2. I saw this happen before. Except it was a deer and didn't exit the rear window.
The deer and a lot of broken glass landed in the laps of a couple of very distraught young women.

3. Almost had that happen to me once.
I bounced a white tail off the windshield of my car, and it landed in the ditch on the other side of the road. If there had been oncoming traffic at the time, it probably would have hit them.

7. That's awful. It reminded me of a friend from high school
18-wheeler runs out of control, takes the runaway truck ramp, and stops fine but in the process clips and knocks over a tree, which rolls down the hillside to a totally different road and hits my friend's car in the windshield (he survived but was pretty beat up). In some ways random crap like that is frightening, but I think it engenders a certain fatalism.

8. That's why hitting a moose is so dangerous
They're not only huge, but their center of mass is conveniently propped up at windshield height.

This incident is bizarre, though.

15. Umm, is there a Canadian SUV called a Sunfire?
Because if not, it was a compact car, not an SUV.

21. Sunfires are small but solid
I drove a Pontiac similar to the J-bodies forever, and they can take a lot of abuse. Sunfires have surprisingly good front-impact safety ratings.

16. The bear entered through the windshield,
and exited through the rear window of an SUV?
I have trouble wrapping my mind around that would be possible.

My heart goes out to the people involved in this tragedy,
and, of course, to the bear also.

19. Almost hit a deer last weekend
While driving via Santa Cruz to halfmoon bay.

The deer had almost crossed the road as I was approaching , but the moment it saw the car it immediately turned and ran across the road again...I hit the breaks and came to a stop inches away from the deer frozen in the headlights. It freaked out all my friends in the car...who would have thought a deer on the other side of the road would decide the run back?

my condolences to the ones who died, humans, bear and all in this freak accident.

23. That happened not too far from me
Bear boars are now pursuing sows in heat - mating season. And they tend to charge around without much regard for other creatures. Or even fast moving vehicles.

I've been driving extra-carefully since this happened.
