Fox News 'journalist': 35% of students paying in-state California university tuition are 'illegals'
Ever wonder why right-wing mythology like illegal alien crime waves, welfare queens, a Muslim/socialist/gay/younameit takeover is so popular? Because a certain cable TV network that abuses the word news can pull stupid stunts like this: "Fox's Carlson Falsely Claims 35% Of CA Students Paying In-State Tuition "Were Illegals"", according to Media Matters: "On The O'Reilly Factor, Gretchen Carlson falsely claimed that "about 35 percent of the in-state tuition people or students" at University of California schools "were illegals." In fact, students receiving the discount account for only 0.34 percent of undergraduates in the University of California system."

Hmm, 35 is about 100 times 0.34. Did Carlson flunk algebra class, or does the Fox Not-Really News editorial staff know how to scare viewers for a quick ratings boost and ad dollars? Oh, and Carlson's supposed to be an actual news reporter who reports on and analyzes facts, as opposed to the opinion commentator O'Reilly.

A screenshot of Papa Bear peddling his dog-whistle bigotry with no shame:

BTW, the real facts: (the links are within the MM article)

University Of California Data: In 2008-2009, 554 Undergraduates Who Were Potentially Undocumented Received Discount. According to the University of California, 766 undergraduates were potentially undocumented in the 2008-2009 academic year. Of these, 554 received tuition discounts under AB 540. (University of California, Annual Report on AB 540 Tuition Exemptions 2008-09 Academic Year, 9/21/10)

University of California Data: In Fall 2008, 162,586 Undergraduate UC Students Were California Residents. According to the University of California, 162,586 undergraduate students in Fall 2008 were California residents. The 554 potentially undocumented students account for 0.34 percent of this population. (University of California, Summary of Students and Staff, Fall 2009)

AFL-CIO Blog: powerful people using the same old dirty tricks of division, diversion and distraction

http://blog.aflcio.org/2010/05/29/tens-of-thousands-protest-arizonas-immigrant-law

“Immigrants are not the cause of America’s problems,” Trumka said. “And S.B. 1070 is not the answer.”

The problem is that privileged and powerful people are using the same old dirty tricks of division, diversion and distraction to make people blame the least among us in order to keep us from seeing and solving our real problems.

Our wisest leaders have always understood that, here in America, on these shores, we must not fall for hate and fear and divisiveness—we must stand together for justice, unity and opportunity."

A study released this week shows undocumented immigrants embody traditional values much more than native-born Americans. For example, 94 percent of undocumented immigrant men work or actively are seeking work, compared with 83 percent of native born men. Undocumented immigrants are more than twice as likely to support traditional families with children: 47 percent of undocumented immigrants today are part of couples with children, compared with 21 percent of native-born Americans. Robert Shapiro authored the report by the New Policy Institute (NPI) a Washington, D.C., research organization.

Undocumented workers don’t lower wages for native-born workers either, Shapiro says. In fact, studies show immigration has increased the average wage of Americans modestly in the short-run, and by more over the long-term as capital investment rises to take account of the larger number of workers. Check out Shapiro’s report here.
