Choked up Anthony Weiner promises colleague he'll seek help.
Edited on Fri Jun-10-11 11:38 AM by mzmolly
... Weiner, who has said he would welcome an ethics probe, publicly apologized Monday for sending flirtatious messages and images on Facebook and Twitter to six women over the past three years and then denying it for a week.

Over the past three days, he has been reaching out to a number of colleagues and supporters, according to one source. Among other things, Weiner called former President Bill Clinton -- who officiated at his wedding ceremony -- to personally express regret for his actions.

According to a Democratic congressman who got one of the calls, Weiner was "very contrite" and said he "let everyone down." The legislator, speaking on condition of not being named because it was a private conversation, said Weiner was so choked up he could "barely get the words out," and told him that he was going to "get some help." ...

I pulled this snippet from a CNN story in GD because I felt it was important to share. I hope he will seek the help he needs. And, I hope he'll declare his intentions to do so, publicly.

1. it's hard to stomach the video piece
I hope he gets the help he needs. Weiner has so much going for him, beautiful wife, loyal friends, he's has been awesome in Congress and his constituents love him.

2. Well, Weiner now knows there's one more person who has violated his privacy
By secretly spewing a "private conversation." What a piece of work.

3. I'm not at all sure that the unnamed congress critter "violated" Weiner's privacy
It's not clear Weiner asked that no comments be made to third parties about conversations that occurred between the two principles. Releases of information through friendly commentators is actually a common practice for celebrities who don't want to deal directly with the press, but who want to get a message out to the public.

Besides, anyone who has passed through middle school understands information flow. The nature of conversations is to share information. Once it's handed over to someone it gets handed along to others, again and again. Most of us come to understand this is an expected function of social networks of friends and co-workers.

Sometimes, you tell someone something in private and it's not meant to leave the room.

5. The only help he needs is for our culture to grow up and get over it's puritanism.
And for people to find meaning in their own lives so they don't feel the need to moralize on their neighbors' (and the congress persons') private affairs.

7. It's sexual harassment.
No person should contact a Representative on the very account they use to publicize themselves, in their job, and have to worry about that person quickly turning the contact into cybersex.

If this happened in his own personal life, he might be little scummy (only if he was married or in a relationship), but it would be different. It would really truly be a private matter, save for any possibility that he might be blackmailed with the information and make a decision based upon it.

14. Someone made that point to me yesterday. Using a position of authority- or abuse of authority.
Edited on Fri Jun-10-11 01:05 PM by KittyWampus
It's a valid point and since I'm a woman, it's a fairly good one. Yes, women can use their authority in a similar manner, but very often it's a man.

maybe weiner recognizes he has a problem that could cost him a job and a marriage if he doesnt get help that will allow him to not feel compulsive in doing this shit

15. He couldn't have been a politician if he quit lying, but
Edited on Fri Jun-10-11 03:08 PM by HereSince1628
he could still be a politician if he doesn't continue to give in to his urge to engage in risky behavior.

Assuming that his attraction will remain for risky sexual contacts, I'd offer instead and as free advice, that he get help developing his capacity to control the impulse/urge to act in a manner that could cause self-harm.

We've all seen the damage he's done to himself without that capacity.
