A group of current and former Republican officials have called on Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) to start fooling around with actual women, instead of the phone sex and “sexting” that Weiner acknowledged after a week of denials.
Since Weiner admitted to the scandal he’s been plagued by calls from Republicans and some Democrats to resign from office, which he refused. This new round of criticism was initiated by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), who in 2007 admitted to enjoying the services of prostitutes. Vitter remained in the Senate and won re-election in 2010.
In an appearance Friday on ABC’s Good Morning America, Vitter said not one Republican called on him to resign because his replacement would’ve been a Democrat, appointed by Louisiana’s Democratic governor at the time.
“It wasn’t just political expediency that let me stay in the Senate, it was the fact that I slept with real women like a man should. There was none of this phone sex or ‘sexting’ as the kids call it,” Vitter said. “It was good, old-fashioned whoring around and paying for it. Just because I support abstinence-only sex education doesn’t mean I have to follow it.”
