News KFC Helps Fight Diabetes With Mega Jug Sized Pepsi (not the Onion)
By Carmel Lobello Friday, June 10, 2011

Behold KFC’s Mega Jug drink size: 64 oz of liquified sugar.

I saw this on BuzzFeed the other day:

Apparently KFC is joining the fight against childhood diabetes by agreeing to donate $1 to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation every time someone buys a Mega Jug of Pepsi.

Just to be clear, a Mega Jug is 64 oz of liquified sugar—an entire half-gallon. That’s almost a six-pack of regular 12-oz cans—800 calories—all in one offensively huge plastic mug.

KFC’s direct style of damage control seems aimed at canceling out the harm caused by offering a half-gallon serving size. “Drink up,” they seem to be saying, “we’ve got you covered.” But customers would probably benefit more if they just slapped a warning label directly onto the drink, the way that tobacco companies do for packs of cigarettes.

4. Juvenile diabetes is a different disease than Adult onset diabetes called Type II
So a cure for juvenile diabetes, which is a problem in producing insulin in the pancreas, will have no benefit to Adult onset diabetes/ Type II, which is what you could get from consuming copious amounts of sugar water from KFC. Type II diabetes is a disease where you constantly produce so much insulin, mostly because of diet, that your cells in your body decide to ignore the signal.

Still pretty fucked up promotion, but they don't even have you covered with a possible cure

5. See myth #3.
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/diabetes-myths/

Myth: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
Fact: No, it does not.  Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease; type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors.  Being overweight does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and a diet high in calories, whether from sugar or from fat, can contribute to weight gain.  If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and regular exercise are recommended to manage your weight.

9. Your immune system views your beta cells as invaders and takes them out. Molecular
mimicry is a possible explanation for this.... sort of like the protein code on joint tissue matching some parasites/bacteria that can pass through the intestinal lining where leaky gut syndrome is an issue... friendly fire is what it is, type 1 may hinge upon the same mechanisms.

12. Thank you for that link. If I hadn't fired my primary care doctor last week, I'd send it to her.
She's on a witch hunt for Type 2 Diabetes, and so focused on it that she's unwilling to look into other health issues, even ones that are more serious.

11. You cannot equally compare 64 oz fountain cup to a 12 oz can
if you don't account for ice taking a good chunk of it. Unless you ask for "NO ICE", you are not getting 64 oz of soda.
