NY Tells Pet Cemeteries to Stop Taking in Humans
A state agency has told New York's animal cemeteries to stop burying the ashes of pet owners alongside their beloved cats, dogs and parakeets.

The order from New York's Division of Cemeteries has blocked at least one burial. And it has upset people who had arranged in advance to join their dead pets, but now may have to go elsewhere.

A cemetery director is resisting, asking the state to allow interments of people already signed up.

And a lawyer whose uncle died after the order was issued says the cemetery division is wrong on the law. She has sent the state a detailed legal memo and says she'll sue if she has to.

Pet cemetery officials reported recently that the number of Americans seeking burial with their pets was rising.

1. Greedy funeral biz lobby at work, it seems
Sue the shit out of them and I applaud your efforts. There is no defensible reason to disallow human ashes and the remains of pets from being co-buried.

3. To play Devil's Advocate here -- human remains are subject to legal protections ...
just about everywhere. Years from now, if someone wants to plow up a pet cemetery, there probably won't be anything to stop them. But if human remains are present, they will have to observe all the legal niceties involved in (slow and expensive) grave relocation, or face serious fines.

Of course, lots of people don't much care what happens to their bones if they're not wearing them. But those who do care have millenia of law and tradition on their side, so it's best not to ignore them.
