Seeking treatment for what?
For being a self centered egotistical asshole?
I am so tired of people seeking "treatment" for every dumb shit they get caught doing...

Weiner should just tell the world, that he's a weaselly little asshole who likes show his pee online... they say fuck off.

Stupid ass.

:hi:

3. This attitude contributes to the appalling state of American mental heath care
Human failings are complex and can't be tied up with a neat little bow.

6. Possibly for compulsive risky potentially self-destructive behavior.
Might be one way to look at it. That he also appears to be an egotistical asshole is part of it. Lots of folks are. But that he knowingly took risks that he knew could jeopardize things important to him---his career and marriage---is something he should probably look at, regardless if this announcement is primarily part of a PR strategy.

7. Agreed.
He needs to take a long look at his self-destructive behavior. He is certainly not alone in the political world in that respect.

8. It's like people getting treatment for "marijuana addiction"
There's no such animal as "marijuana addiction". You may be psychologically dependent on it, but that isn't an "addiction". Ask any heroin addict.

I'd like to see the science behind any treatment that a "therapist" would use to "cure" Weiner's supposed affliction.

Beyond the obvious stupidity of knowing he'd be caught, of course.

But the actual ACTS he committed are well within the range of normal human sexual behaviour and not aberrant in any way. Distasteful, maybe. But not criminal.

13. No kidding.
You can behave badly, blame the 'disorder du jour' and drum up sympathy. :eyes:
What the hell happened to simple personal responsibility? Behaving honorably? Actually giving 3 seconds thought before you do something?

14. Perhaps the mirror box trick as depicted on a House episode would do the trick, put
your pecker in one side, and see its reflection in the other side, then it won't feel so lonely.

17. Addiction is an affliction of the mind, an obsession.
Sometimes people actually have to take medication for it.

I used to work with a woman who had an obsessive compulsive disorder that was quite serious. She could not leave the office unless someone checked to make sure she had turned all the equipment off and properly locked the door.

I saw her leaving her car one day in the early morning. She walked around it a number of times, checking everything. Her anxiety was so great. I kind of understood because if she did not go through all these steps checking everything over and over she felt a panic attack. I really can understand it.

Some people do crazy, repetitive things that they would rather not do, that they know they should not do, but they only can relax if they do them. That is a disorder that makes a person's life miserable.

Sometimes people don't realize what is going on within them until someone outside looks at what they are doing and asks them about it, draws it to their attention.

Weiner's tweets made absolutely no sense considering his position. But it probably gave him a strange relief to be doing the things he was doing. You may laugh and think it was merely a sexual thing, but I think there was more -- that when he took the huge risks that he took, the risk of looking like an absolute fool, there had to be some motivation behind it that we don't understand.

Normally, the desire not to look foolish, not to be laughed at would overcome the desire to do the things he was doing. That is why I think that he suffered from a compulsion like my co-worker who walked around her car so many times in the morning. She must have known that anyone watching her would laugh, but she only felt secure, felt good, if she did that foolish thing.

As I posted earlier, I knew a man whose name had the same colloquial meaning as Weiner's last name. He was extremely shy, and if you talked to him he always apologized or made a comment about his name. Very strange. He was tortured by it. I think it was the result of being teased by bullies as a child. So that is why Weiner needs to have compassionate treatment. He is battling some inner demon that we cannot see.
