Weiner needs to resign!!!

There - I said it.

But it makes me no less pro-choice, pro-environment, pro-civil liberties, pro-gun control, pro-separation of church and state.

Just because I want Weiner to resign...

I still despise the bushco regime as the most criminal, second only to the Nixon administration.

What makes us different from freepers?

WE DON"T MARCH IN LOCK-STEP!

So to those DUers that tend to use a broad brush, it is possible to agree to disagree and still be a progressive.

1. We definitely disagree on this.
Why should we cave to Republican pressure? Why should they always get their own way and we have to eat shit? Fuck them and what they want.

7. But it's not just Republicans that are calling for his resignation ...
The House Democratic leader, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, spoke to Mr. Weiner on the phone Saturday morning and, notably, released her statement calling for his resignation after he told her of his plan to get treatment and to take the leave. Mr. Weiner received a similar phone call from Representative Steve J. Israel of New York, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, urging him to resign.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/12/nyregion/pelosi-calls-on-weiner-to-resign.html?_r=2&hp

I personally do not believe that he should resign because I don't feel that anything he did that has been revealed is all that serious. It is embarrassing and stupid but to me it is not that big of a deal. However there may be more that we don't know and maybe that's why Pelosi has asked for his resignation.

68. EXACTLY ... that is the excuse a child gives "but everybody else is doing it".
Most learn as children that that excuse won't fly with your parents, they try it but it doesn't work. I tried that crap reasoning when I was about 10 and my parents said they didn't care what others did or didn't do. My parents cared about my behavior and they weren't having any of that "everybody else doing it excuse".

8. What about the ripple effect?
Bill Clinton was a damn good president, and he lied about Monica.

Al Gore should have been president, but he had to deal with the ripple effect of Bill's lying. If he did not have to contend with the Bill factor, he might have breezed to a presidency in such a close election.

Don't assume if Weiner survives this, that there will not be implications beyond his constituents - because there will be! Keeping him on the Hill undermines much more than just the people that voted for him.

Why give the pukes an ounce of additional ammunition to distract etc.

58. He should not resign. His constituents do not want him to.
But he should leave this party. There is nothing in it for him or his constituents. He should change his affiliation to Ind. and then make them beg him for his vote when they need it. This way he gets to bargain for his dist. Being in that party where no one has the guts to stand up for anything, they will not care what it does to his dist, they will try to marginalize him. As an Ind. he will have a lot more stature and won't have to ask them for permission to have sex if he wants it.

I despise people who allow the Repubicans to run our lives. That is what I loved about Weiner. We need more of him willing to take them on. They went after him for that, and the cowardly dems, once again, gave their lunch to the schoolyard bullies. I am so sick of this happening, over and over again.

61. This shit gets old.
Gore ran a horrible campaign. He always looked as if he had smelled something bad. He was an arrogant moralizer. In short, he was an unappealing prude. His policies were okay but his manner was Nixon like.

Still, if he had run toward the Clinton/Gore administration instead of away from it he would have won easily. If he had allowed Clinton to campaign for him he would have won. If he had fired Donna Brazile and gotten a better manager he would have won. No one wanted to have a beer or watch a game with him because his holier-than-thou attitude was a total turn off.

And after all is said and done it comes down to this. Clinton had a female problem - they were all over him and he could not always resist. Gore had a female problem - they were NOT all over him but he was inappropriately all over them.

22. So you are saying that if Weiner's support drops to 49% in his district,
you would demand that he resign? You are saying that by insisting that as long as the majority of Weiner's constituents support him he should stay on. His support was at 51% before the news about teenage girls hit the news. You can call the teenage girls story old news if you want, it came out one day ago. If Weiner's support is at 40% come Monday, step forward and live up to the principle that you are claiming to espouse and call for Weiner to resign because the majority of the people in his district no longer support him. I doubt that you will live up to your self stated principle at crunch time.

As soon as he is not a distraction, something else will be.

Be it Obama's birth certificate
Obama's a secret Muslim
Weiner's weiner
Death panels
etc...

The entire Republican strategy is to create distractions from the real issues.

If Sen. David Vitter, who broke the law by purchasing a prostitute to satisfy his fantasies which included him wearing a diaper, did not make him a lightning rod, then why is Weiner any different?

Because Weiner is a Dem and a progressive.

I hope we have not all grown so cynical that we assume everybody (particularly men) are dickheads; therefore, who gives a shit if they abuse the public trust. Everybody's doing it!

I have been a progressive activist for a long time, and I still believe in ideals connected to what amounts to a sacred trust that is established between an elected official and the public.

44. Part of it is the nature of the Senate
I mean, when's the last time a Senator was forced to lose his/her seat, except as a result of what happened at the ballot box?

A Senator is 1% of the Senate, a Congressman is less than a third of that in the House. That might just be the difference.

74. Point to a politician who isn't arrogant & says nothing that can't be construed as a lie.
To wake up one morning saying, "I think I'll be a Congressman; I'll get a lot of people to give me money and get a lot of people will vote for me." Sure, that's not arrogant. (And you can substitute "Senator", "Governor" or "President" as needed.)

And, quite frankly, I don't give a damn whether or not a politician lies to me. Especially if it's about his private sexual behavior. Humans are hard-wired by evolution to lie about such things. What I care about is what they do: do they advocate, support & vote for policies which can help me & the country or don't they?

What gets me is that otherwise intelligent people always fall for shit like this, just because it's about sex. They repeat Breitbart's insinuations that Weiner was stalking a minor child and having an active online sexual relationship her. THOSE ARE THE DESTRUCTIVE & BLATANT LIES YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT! (There are many more.)

Instead, some DUers accept everything Breitbart says as the gospel truth, simply because it makes Weiner look bad, and parrot it here - including calls for Weiner to resign.

13. Yes, that's right
I can't believe the name calling and accusations ("Well, you excuse Bush's and Obama's lies!") that have gone on here since Weinergate was shown to be with merit. I saw many people who defended Rep. Weiner up until his press conference, and I can't possibly imagine going back to them to tell them they were fools for defending someone who was a champion for progressive causes.

But once the jig was up, it is time to distance ourselves from someone who actively lied to us to get us to defend him. We don't need to keep it up after we know enough of the truth. I can respect the fact that some of my fellow DUer's aren't quite there yet, but I hope to make my points with logic, and not mere ridicule.

32. Why?
They are all doing it, screwing around and thinking their male parts are purty. The Republicans, the Democrats...they always have and always will. Check up on some history.

Basically what you are supporting is getting rid of one of the only effective and consistent progressive voices in Congress. It isn't like everyone doesn't lie about sex, especially men, and men unfortunately have the majority voice in our government. But that is what we are stuck with. Personally I'd rather retain a progressive hypocritical progressive male, than a holier than thou lying theiving Republican pig male.

You gotta make your choices in these days and times. I suggest you pick the lesser of 2 evils in this case and face a little reality.

in saying, "We're no worse than the Republicons are." I guess I hold people who say they're on my side to a higher standard.

Effective? What laws has Anthony Weiner sponsored that have gotten passed? I'm starting to come to the conclusion that all he ever wanted was to have fiery speeches (signifying nothing) from the floor of the House on the NYC news, I sure have seen enough of them. That's not good enough if you want to get laws passed, but it passes for 'balls' in NYC, and they might elect you mayor over it.

There's no way a Repig gets this district, if it survives redistricting. I'm sure my rep would like some progressive voters to add to his district when it comes time for re-election.

And Thomas refuses to resign because he knows the Democratic leadership won't press this issue. Might be disruptive and paralyze the process of government. What process? So, they're deep-sixing Weiner, instead. After all, they have to do something - people might think the institution itself is less than immaculate.

Immaculate.

Anthony Weiner says he will take leave of absence, seek ‘treatment’ as scandal grows

Just hours after three leading Democrats called on him to resign, Rep. Anthony Weiner announced he will take a leave of absence from Congress and enter a treatment program.

Saturday began with a major blow to Weiner's chances for survival, as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, all issued statements urging Weiner to leave Congress.

Why are you measuring your opinion with that of progressive, anyway?

I think we should only ask the people in his Congressional District whether or not they suffer for asking their member to step down. I'm betting that they would suffer.... greatly.

Who cares what people do with their personal e-mail, text, phone sex, sexting, chat rooms or pornography after hours, anyway, especially if they are serious about what they do when they show up for work in their day job.

It's that fucking simple. And, it's progressive thinking, in my book.

48. If someone needs to go, it is those threatening to vote no on raising the debt limit
and crashing the US economy. I think people making public statements to this effect should see their constituents start a recall petition on them. That way, if we do slip into a second depression, the recalls are ready to proceed and those legislators can join the ranks of the great unemployed. That is who I think should go. What Weiner did pales in comparison to what they are doing. Just a difference of opinion, I guess.

Sam

66. And Shrub and Shooter are war criminals....
And lied to a nation to start their war.

I don't disagree with your sentiments about pukes who want to crash the economy while providing corporate welfare, but if we condone Weiner's lying - then where do you draw the line? How much worse of a lie would he have to have told before you said, that's too much?

51. Why do you think he should resign?
IMO this is between his constituents and him. I don't have an opinion. My understanding is that he has committed no crime.

Judging by the news sites I frequent, Democrats are far more interested in this story than Republicans, but I don't think most people care. I think most people's attention is focused upon life issues - unemployment, economic worries, dropping real incomes, worries over retirement and healthcare....

Sorry, I just don't see why this guy needs to take one for the party, nor do I think the job of every individual representative or senator is to make the party look good. It is to represent their constituents well. Sometimes a representative will have to take issues with the party, and sometimes stuff like this will come out. It is just not important in the larger scheme of things.

Just because the press is somewhat obsessed doesn't mean any of us should be.

62. Simple., he lied repeatedly, and it's not about his personal life
Despite the cynicism of many here who have suggested that all politicians lie, so what the fuck --- why single him him out. I'd rather not lower the bar so much that we condone lying as acceptable (for anyone). I believe that breaks the sacred trust of being a public servant.

I care not one bit what he is into sexually, nor should anybody (except I assume his wife).

Lies create a ripple effect which would transcend NY and be a distraction - it won't go away.

56. It's both our biggest strength and our biggest weakness.
Too much lock-stepping is just plain dangerous (not to mention pretty creepy), but not enough unity often hurts us. Been pondering ways to herd us cats for over 20 years, and I haven't come up with a good idea yet. :)

70. No, he does not need to resign! He fucked up but let his constituents
have a voice! If they want him gone, then so be it!

It is not up to you or me to tell him what to do!

72. I wholly agree. Weiner has to resign, the quicker the better.
The objectives of the Progressive Movement are more important then any one person. Weiner will never again be effective and worse, he hobbles our progress. If was really an ally in our work, he'd leave immediatley.
