Gabrielle Giffords: First Photos Posted on Facebook (since shooting)
http://abcnews.go.com/US/gabrielle-giffords-photos-posted-facebook/story?id=13822144

The first pictures of a smiling Rep. Gabrielle Giffords were released today, nearly six months after she was shot in the head at a community event in Tucson in January.

The Democratic congresswoman from Arizona has been undergoing rehabilitation at the IRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston following a shooting at a Jan. 8 meet and greet event that left six people dead and 13 people injured including Giffords.

The new photos were posted on her Facebook page. The pictures were taken on May 17, 2011, a day after she watch her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, take off on the Space Shuttle Endeavor.

On May 18, she underwent surgery to replace a piece of her skull.

1. Why post this in this forum?
This would be more appropriate in the general discussion forum.

9. Kind of, I would make it a medical issue and the advances
in repairing gun shot wounds. The dr's experience in treating such wounds, IIRC, came from his experience in Iraq. It would be one of the few good things that came out of Bush's deadly lie.

14. How weird, some reason you didn't mention that in your OP?
Edited on Sun Jun-12-11 11:34 AM by Tejas
Do you wait for a "rise" out of readers before stating a position?

That would be defined as trolling in most circles, luckily you got away with only simply getting your thread {rightfully} moved by the mods.

7.  OK. Look at it this way
Edited on Sun Jun-12-11 11:10 AM by gejohnston
The magazine size or semi auto or revolver is a non issue. Here is the real issue, he used illegal drugs. If he could not get one legally, his drug connection would have helped him out. That is true anywhere in the world including UK or Western Europe, where he would almost just as likely used a submachine gun, (which are used in crimes there more than here). If you know were to go, you can buy the same Glock or Ruger, or Walther for a hundred bucks in Toronto or Montreal for less than half the price of a legal gun in either country.
On that same day, going by conservative estimates by Clinton's CDC, 219 rapes, armed robberies, and other violent crimes were prevented because someone had easy access to a handgun.

One more thing, while everyone was getting hysterical over the gun, Palin's cross hairs (which looked more like 19th century Klan symbols than a rifle scope, but she would not know that), or the possible political motivations of a schizophrenic, the most important lesson was completely ignored.
He is not right wing, he is not left wing, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia only after he was arrested.
Why was nothing done before? Jan Brewer closed all of the community mental health centers in Pima County prior to that. His parents nor his girl friend had the financial means to get him proper help, assuming they had the brains to ponder the issue. I see it as less of a gun issue and more of a mental affordable health care issue.

In short, I don't blame Palin, the NRA, or even JL (because he was out of his mind) I blame Brewer and her greedy cronies and handlers.

edited to add longer rant.

8. It would have been worse if Loughner had used standard capacity magazines.
He had fired 32 round when his gun jammed due to the magazine follower spring not having enough strength to push the final round into the path of the slide in time to be picked up smoothly. The gun jammed on the 33rd round. He was trying to clear the jam when he was tackled by the old lady.

If he had used standard capacity magazines and carried extra loaded magazines like the VT killer did, then he could have fired until empty and then reloaded in about one second and killed more people, and more, and more as long as he had extra loaded magazines on him. Several mass killers did that and they weren't stopped. Loughner is the only one to have used an extended capacity magazine and his magazine failed.

24. The VT killer shot more people than Loughner did.
And you say that isn't persuasive evidence? So did the Ft. Hood killer and the Luby's killer. All three used standard capacity magazines and reloaded. And you aren't persuaded by each one raking up more kills.

Just what would you consider persuasive evidence that standard capacity magazines are deadlier due to their incresed reliability?

27. I Think You're Exhibiting An Unhealthy Interest In All This.

Your posts are divulging a lot more about you than you probably intended. And you sure as hell aren't advancing the cause of the gun rights movement here at DU---I'm happy to say.....

ie: post #5

Using a traggic incident to further agendas against basic civil rights, it's the McCarthy way.

29. Rebutting your ignorance is unhealthy?
I have just proven to you what anyone who is knowledgeable about guns already knew - that extended capacity magazines are unreliable. A mass killer with multiple standard magazines is more dangerous than one with high capacity magazines. So now you want to play armchair psychiatrist?

6. It is good that she is recovering.
No, I won't surrender my guns because of what a crazy gun in Arizona did. I may need to defend myself from a crazy guy someday. If so I don't want to have to wait until his gun jams and hope someone tackles him.

And they're saying she'll be released from the hospital by the end of the month. There's still a long road ahead of her, but she's made remarkable progress. Just amazing.
