Obama Grants O'Reilly Super Bowl Interview
Sam Stein - HuffPo

<snip>

MIAMI -- President Barack Obama has agreed to conduct an interview with Fox News host Bill O'Reilly as part of a pregame package for Fox Broadcasting Channel's Super Bowl coverage, an Obama administration official confirmed to The Huffington Post.

This wouldn't mark the first time the president sat down with a Fox News interviewer, but it would be rare. The White House has sparred bitterly with the network over its coverage of the president, which has occasionally dipped into the conspiratorial.

The relationship hit a nadir when the White House launched an informal boycott of Fox News during 2009. Some bitterness has thawed since then, however, particularly when the administration tried to reach more conservative-leaning audiences during the height of the health-care debate.

That said, Obama's decision to sit down with O'Reilly may be driven less by ratings than tradition. An aide said it is customary for the sitting president to sit down for an interview with the network hosting the Super Bowl.

24. That's fine, but when has he kept his friends close?
Edited on Thu Jan-06-11 08:02 PM by WhaTHellsgoingonhere
In this context, MSNBC is friend and Fox is enemy.

When has Obama given his friends the time of day?

He's been on Fox, Leno, Letterman. Why won't he go on with Keith or Rachel? :)

EDIT: Forgot Ed!

2. Maybe Obama can explain that "tides" thing to BillO.
So the President agreed to an interview with a man who thinks that the "tides go in and out you can't explain that"?

Brilliant. Really. It should be a hoot.

4. I see his "Please love me!!!" tour continues.....
Good luck to him on that. He's obviously done his research and determined that it's more lucrative for him either politically or otherwise to continue attempting to win over people that hate him and will always hate him than it is to make even the slightest of overtures towards the people responsible for him being where he is.

I hope it works out for him.

46. If it was Beck or his ilk I'd agree
Oreilly is a moran, but he's reasonably positive about Obama. It's a pretty stark contrast compared to Beck, etc. If I was President (lol) and I wanted to reach the rightwing television viewer, I'd agree to that interview.

29. Yeah I mean what better choice for an interview
than with a man who says shit like "tide goes in, tide goes out, no one can explain it". Obama is being interview by Homer Simpson. Good idea, make a fucking joke out of the presidency, legitimize a propaganda arm of the Republican party, and do it all in front of the biggest national TV audience of the year.

44. It's customary to do an interview with the network hosting the Super Bowl.
He did it with Katie Couric last year because CBS played the Super Bowl. And O'Reilly is, comparatively speaking, one of the saner ones at Fox.

17. Bush did something similar...
...with Tim Russert (I think). It was WAY EARLY in the campaign so any damage could be marginalized. What they wanted was to see if they could go toe to toe when the heat got on. Well, Bush could only spout talking points and they kept him away from any serious questions.

Think they are doing the something similar, to see if Obama can overpower their BS...if so, then they can reach independent voters that watch Fox.

Billo is his usual bloviating self but now that Obama's the President, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

32. it's because Fox is showing the Super Bowl this year and thus also the pregame presidential intvw
so they had to get someone from that Republican Party partisan arm "Fox News". Wonder why they couldn't use Chris Wallace or heck maybe Shepard Smith?

33. Since the tax cut extension Obama seems to be more comfortable being a phoney baloney.
I think he hated obfuscating the public option away but he's since become quite numb. I used to really admire him (believe it or not) and I still smile sometimes when I see him appear on the teevee.

39. it's not an interview with fox so much as an interview with the network that got the super bowl.
besides, o'really is quite likely to tone it down and play (comparatively) nice given the wider audience for the day.

if obama had to give fox an interview, this would be the time and place for it, and this way they can't claim he shut them out.
