Is it a crime to fake a historical document, such as a letter JFK supposedly wrote,
but really didn't?

Or to fake a painting by say, Van Gogh?

DISCLAIMER: I'm not planning to do anything like this, but an episode of MURDER, SHE WROTE, where someone faked a letter Washington supposedly wrote, made me think of this.

1. Um, yes, forgery is a crime.
Of course, you can copy a van Gogh to practice your painting. But if you try to sell it to someone as a van Gogh you'll be van going to prison.

2. It isn't a crime to FAKE it, but trying to sell it as an authentic collectible, well, yeah that is.
We just had a local "collectibles" dealer get busted up one side and down the other for a SHITLOAD of forged "authentic" signatures and other items he had been selling both in his shop and over the Internet. You can fake it all you want - and post it on the Internet. There's a lot of that shit that gets posted here on DU - we call it "humor". Just don't try to pass it off as real and make money from it.

Oh - JFK wrote this post.

6. Remember the Mormon & Hitler document scandals ...people will do anything to make a buck..
or to pass off an item as genuine. Like the JFK death ambulance sale recently...even with junkyard photos of its destruction, from the JFK Library it was sold with great fan fair.

8. It's only a crime in both , if you claim them as real.
