Poll question: If you were a prominent artist, would you accept an invitation to perform for a Republican?
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 04:08 PM by Dawson Leery
Example: If George Bush asked you to sing at the Whitehouse, would you have gone?
If Sarah Palin asked you to perform at one of her campaign events, would you?

Please feel free to state why you would or would not or under what circumstances.

2. As an artist, I guess I'm somewhat open-minded about Repubs in general. But Bush?
fuck no.

3. Depends.
If it was someone I really loathed, such as the two you mention - no way. If it was a "lesser evil," I would do it if the price was right - and then use that money to donate to a cause I care about and they don't.

4. I said yes
Not the two from your examples; but maybe for someone I knew, and not for a political fundraiser or event. There are some good people who happen to be Republican.

5. For a republican president at the WH? Probably. For a republican jerk at a campaign rally, no.

At a fund raiser for a worthy cause, yes.

6. no. not even at the White House.
I probably wouldn't perform for any politician under any circumstances. But I especially wouldn't perform for anyone from that party. Not one current republican I am aware of has any ethical or moral principles and I am way beyond "being polite" or "taking the high road". Those days are over.

7. Cough up a million dollars and Elton John will do it.
He'd perform for Hitler had he been around in the 1930s.

9. Yes, Green's Law applies.
If your money's green, I'll take it.

Yes, I'd perform for a prominent GOPer in any non-political function, but they should probably be aware that as a militant atheist raised devoutly religious I "tithe" to liberal social causes and organizations 10%. It wouldn't feel right for me not to, so any GOPer paying me to perform is partially-supporting the organizations I support, organizations like Planned Parenthood & Equality Maryland.

13. Here's a list of ready-made rationalizations for anyone who says no:
"Think of the GOOD I can do with this money."

"They stole it, I'm going to return it to its rightful owners."

"Suckers. I overcharged them by 100%, anyway."

"I totally took a shit in their toilet and didn't flush. Truth to POWER!"

"I needed to look in their eyes, to see the coldness."

"I went to screw with them."

and so on.

22. Sure, I'll perform...
...although I won't promise to stick to any agreed-upon content.

The money would go to Russ Feingold's Progressives United.

14. I lived in a southern town as a teenager during the 60's.
My band was to play for a downtown event
I found out that very day it was for George Wallace
I immediately cancelled and they had no entertainment.

15. Prominent artists sometimes have very short careers
I'd keep my mouth shut and not venture off into political matters.

I might feel differently if I were a long established, legendary artist - or if I were willing to see my career go down the toilet in exchange for using my public platform to express my political views.

16. Depends on the Republican
Palin no, Olimpia Snowe yes.

About 25% of the republicans in Congress, I would probably perform for.

19. Absolutely Not
In fact, when I was performing several years ago, my band turned down a job with a Republican Gubernatorial candidate. It cost us short term money, but when word got out, we picked up some jobs from a few prominent Dems. Principles pay

20. Have performed for several charity organizations
that had many celebs and politicians but since they were mostly to benefit children, homeless and the environment there prolly weren't a lot of republicans in attendance. Also at events for Maxine Waters. It's an African music and dance ensemble though so not the type of thing that righties would want at their events these days.

21. The questions are wildly divergent....
'Sing at the WH' can be an event that might occur at any WH. So that is a maybe. Bush pushes the limit, but the WH belongs to other than the residents, and the events there often do as well. Example, Streisand got her whatever award from GW, the irony was not lost on either person, nor the observing public.
A campaign event is an endorsement, that is a most certain no.
The two things are not similar at all.

23. I voted Unsure.
In your hypothetical scenario, does "prominent artist" mean I already make a comfortable living and have health insurance and money banked for when I am unable to play any more?

In that case, no.

If I am "prominent" but in the same financial situation I am in now, I would think about it depending on how much $ was offered for the gig.

25. Not only would I say no, I'd say WHY, too.
It's like boycotting a business. It doesn't do any good unless you let them know why you're boycotting.

26. Depends on which republican, what the nature of the function is, and who the audience is.
If Bush wanted me to perform at the Whitehouse for something like a visit of foreign heads of state, that's a lot different than Palin wanting me to be at one of her campaign rallies.

The Chimp or the Grifter from Wasilla .... no way.

A "moderate" republican (hey it could happen) for a cause I believe in ....of course.

30. Depends on the Republican.
Sarah Palin? Only if I could eat a couple huge meals of beans and sauerkraut beforehand... =P

Olympia Snowe? Sure.

At the Bush White House? Yes, actually...because as much as I couldn't stand the guy, I think I'd do it to honor the office.
