Rahm's first 30 days as mayor
Edited on Fri Jun-17-11 08:30 AM by mucifer
Here is a link to a 10 minute video clip from a PBS local news program "Chicago Tonight" which is much better than network local news.

They had 2 panelists discussing the mayor. One from "The Reader" a local liberal free newspaper and the other from "Crains Business" a local business newspaper.

They were both somewhat optomistic.

The Emanuel Administration has accomplished many tasks in its first 30 days. Some of them are:

Identified $75 million in savings to the City’s budget and implemented initiatives accounting for more than $25 million of those savings
Redeployed 650 Chicago Police Department officers into Chicago’s communities
Secured commitments from global companies to bring 2,700 jobs to Chicago
Outlined historic levels of City-County collaboration to save taxpayers up to $140 million per year by 2014
Signed six Executive Orders strengthening ethics rules for City employees
Started construction of city’s first protected bike lanes
Announced $75 million in savings to the FY 2012 Chicago Public Schools budget

BTW I did not vote for Rahm. But, Chicago is my city and I want him to do well.

11. I am looking for a space with lots of windows to hang my art
It's already there! In Old Town, in a closet! Dear Chicago, don't you have an empty office with lots of windows for me to have a show?

5. he is also working to lengthen chicago's school day.
he knows it will take money, every time he mentions it he points out that the teachers will get paid. but he is dead on that this needs to happen.

he has also been very welcoming to the city council members. he came up to the 49th for a democratic party of the 49th meeting. daley never visited or uttered a word to us. my alderman got a committee assignment that he wanted and was perfect for. i am told he really listened to all 50 of them.

i didn't vote for him either, but mostly to reinforce that this is a staunchly progressive ward i voted for del valle. i knew he would win, i was just hoping there would not be a runoff. i love being an election judge, but i dread it also. didn't want an extra election that was a foregone conclusion.

12. Voted for del Valle, but I also want Rahmbo to do well for our city's sake.
He's still going to try to pull one over on the teacher's union, but I hope union leadership stands strong.

Not every school day needs to be lengthened. What we need is a longer minimum standard where students are required to spend at least so many minutes per day in classroom instruction and students at the elementary level all get recess. Some schools are already doing that.

I hope the CPS "Area Supervisors" are done away with. That's a waste of taxpayer money right there. Those people are paid inflated salaries to basically do nothing.
