City may pay millions in private tuition over lack of public school spots for special needs children
The city is on the hook for millions of dollars in private school tuition after failing to find seats for thousands of kindergartners with special needs, the Daily News has learned.

The Department of Education missed a June 15 deadline to find spots for thousands of kindergartners with disabilities - and now the city could be liable for their tuition in private schools, officials acknowledged.

The holdup is also causing panic for families who are still waiting to hear where their kids are going to kindergarten next year.

"We're still in limbo," said Maria Farano of Staten Island, who still doesn't know where her daughter, who has autism, will attend kindergarten in the fall.

6. People with Special Needs get screwed over all the time. Why?
Because they don't have a large voice and they don't vote.

As a special mom, I can never let my guard down. But how many parents are like that? How many parents know they need to be like that?
My daughter was in 4th grade (she's now 23) when I figured it out.

The only good thing is when the media finds out, the people that are doing the screwing look really bad for taking advantage of special needs kids and many times the screwers will cave. But never without a fight.

9. there are a lot of specialized schools out there.
my daughter went to a therapeutic day school. there is one in each of the 6 regions of cps, and all are private schools. all have substantial non-profit resources behind them. kids are required to earn their credits and take required courses, and they get a cps diploma. but that is about it. they answer to the feds.

i would kind of hate to see cps running that school in particular. the level of support and therapy that she got saved her life. putting your kids education in the hands of a crusty old bureaucracy is one thing. putting their life in those hands is another thing all together.

10. The larger question is how many families can afford private schools
The ones working with special needs children are usually very expensive.
