4. Yep.
Although I'd use equitable tax policy, but I agree that pushing parties is a mugs game these days. Pushing issues is probably better.

5. perhaps they believe campaigning in the off year
is a waste of time, $ and resources. Not everyone reads polls the same :)

If the politician or party matches your feelings about policies then support him/her.

11. There was a time when I voted for Republicans
people like Case (US Senator, NJ) or Rockefeller.... but those days are long gone. I vote for/against a candidate based on his/her voting record- my US Rep (repug) is pretty low on that score

12. Nope. Though I can well imagine voting republican back in the 19th century.
I've never voted for a Republican and it's hard to imagine ever doing so. I have, however, voted Peace & Freedom and Green on several occasions when the nose-holding became too painful. A more common occurrence as the Democratic Party becomes ever more right wing.
