Orange, Seminole included in review; nearly 7,000 scores invalidated statewide

Orange and Seminole counties' school districts are among 14 districts statewide flagged for "extremely unusual levels" of erasures on some FCAT exams, the Florida Department of Education said Thursday.

The districts have been asked to investigate these potential cheating cases, picked up in a new "data-forensic" review the state employed this year. Schools in the 14 districts cited for unusual erasures will have their A-to-F school grades withheld unless and until the state's concerns are resolved.

The possibly problematic tests were found at one school in Orange and two in Seminole, officials said.

Based on the same forensic review, the state also has invalidated 6,967 student FCAT and algebra-exam scores — significantly more than the 100 FCAT scores invalidated last year but still a tiny fraction of the more than 4 million exams taken this spring, according to Tom Butler, a department spokesman.
