If we run anyone in opposition to Pres. Obama,
it will surely be a republican pres in 2012. Were you thinking 2016 instead of 2012?

14. I remember hearing that argument nightly for months on end.
It was when Hillary and Obama were ripping at each other and neither would back down.

Look how valid that turned out.

20. Well, ok, let's ignore history and just have the DEMs run against each other.
I am sure it will work in our favor 'this' time.

21. So you're saying that argument was not made throughout the
primaries in 2008 and that Obama did not win with a majority of the votes after them. That or you're saying we should completely ignore that history in favor of some other history you are not pointing out here.

Or you are simply fearmongering.

Edited on Fri Jan-07-11 12:54 PM by rosesaylavee
Perhaps your memory of the Carter Administration has grown dim, Dems did run a primary that year and the result was Reagan. Tho Carter ran, the thinking was that his energy and monies spent against his DEM challenger (Ted Kennedy) were what lost that race.

I don't care what happened or who said what in the 2008 primary. Getting a DEM president to the 2nd term is what's under discussion here.

33. Ah, so you your real objective is getting Obama to a second term.
Any other Dem would be a first term.

First off, Obama is not Carter, second Repubs have no Raygun to run against anyone that comes out of a Dem primary.

So your argument does not hold water. You are clearly fearmongering.

35. Rather than fearmongering, perhaps we just disagree.
I think having a primary in 2012 would be a waste of time and would have negative results. My objective is having a DEM president win in 2012. President Obama has the best chance at that.

And btw, if I really wanted to scare you I could. :smoke:

24. No Republican could have won in 2008
The country was fed up with Bush, the Republicans put up a horribly-weak candidate who couldn't rally the party's base to support him, and the market crash in September of that year all but sealed the deal.

The Democrats must be united going into next year. The divisions of the past two years hurt us very badly and look at what happened in November as a result. When we're not united, we cannot define ourselves and it allows our opponents to define us instead (i.e.--LIE about what we intend to do).

He should have gotten the nomination in 2004: intelligent, attractive, Southerner, liberal, populist, understands the MIC and has challenged it and could bring in a lot of independents.

Halberstam in his book "War in a Time of Peace" (about the Clinton foreign policy 1992 to 2000), speaks at length about Wes Clark and his background. Since the book was written before Clark got involved in presidential politics, Halberstam didn't have an axe to grind. Clark was certainly not very popular among his military peers (except within his own clique) and stepped on a lot of fingers while climbing the ladder of military success. I would imagine that GOP oppo research would have had a field day talking to former military officers and getting Wes Clark stories.

39. Good Lord - that was debunked to death in 2004.
Where were you?

Gen. Mike Jackson, himself, said the media made far too much out of the conversation - which was just heat-of-the-moment shit.

Besides, I would rather hope no one would take Jackson's side of any argument, given his prominent role in the Bloody Sunday attacks that killed 13 civilians in Ireland in 1972.

42. I will re-direct the question to you. What does it mean to be a "Democrat" anymore? Now that our

elected "Democrats" are:

1.) Not only supporting, but also expanding unnecessary, unjust wars
2.) Endorsing cuts to SS, Medicare, and the rest of the social safety net
3.) Supporting union busting, supporting trade agreements that send jobs overseas
4.) Forcing a mandate on us to participate in the same private insurance ponzi scheme that ruined healthcare

etc etc etc.

If "winning elections" is all that matters, and principles are "negotiable", then I'm out.

who takes no crap and runs a big scarey woman union leader as VP. Someone who we might not know about yet, but who is shouting liberal progressive values from the rooftops. Someone who knows how to spin and market and frame the issues based on the reality that the working middle class is being slaughtered. And someone who hasn't already caved to the current president's agenda.

Then I will delight in watching the end of these rat bastard repukelicans and democrats who "work with" them.
