Poll question: Would you support an increase in the gasoline and diesel tax to eliminate potholes?
Edited on Fri Jun-17-11 05:46 PM by lfairban
They are not just inconvenient, they ware shock absorbers and tires out quicker. Also they can cause or help cause accidents.

I doubt that all the potholes will be fixed in alleys and less traveled streets in any case, but assuming that the responsible government agencies would adequately prioritize the repairs, how much would that be worth to you.

I have not reviewed enough data to be sure these numbers make sense, I am just trying to find out if this is something people would be willing to support.

1. No, but I'd support taxing the rich for a change!
It's been a long time since they've been taxed.

2. How about taxing the big box stores that run heavily-laden trucks over those roads?

Let THEM pay the true costs of doing business in the US.

5. I support the enlistment of volunteer crews to fill potholes
My ex-wife used to live in a small town where every year the community had a pot hole repair party.

It was a big potluck and beer fest. The town provided materials.

6. Not an easy answer.
If I still lived in Chicago, yes, I would support anything to get the potholes fixed!

I live in Arizona, now. I'd support anything to implement mental health screenings for politicians.

7. No, although I do support pot hole repair. Take it out the city exec's salaries
Edited on Fri Jun-17-11 05:10 PM by ixion

I saw a city improvement in progress sign today. They're installing an "advanced traffic system" at an intersection. Cost: 3.4 million and change.

How about scrapping the new stop lights and fixing the pot holes? It seems like 3.4 mil could fix a whole lotta holes.

12. Big oil 'pays' their share and then just jacks the price of gas up
How do you think they got to be big in the first place?

9. If I wanted to pay for PA's pothole problem I'd move there.
Besides, paying for Florida's sinkhole problem is far more interesting. ;)

10. I wonder realistically . . .
. . . what the price tag to fix all the potholes would be. Even a 1cent per gallon tax would generate in the neighborhood of 150 million dollars per year - more if diesel is added. IMHO the main brunt should be on trucks as they cause a vastly disproportionate amount of wear and tear on the infrastructure.

11. Good point!
I should have included diesel. (OP edited)

Trucks use more fuel. In low speed city use with stop and go traffic, the fuel usage is probably proportional to the vehicle mass. At a given highway speed, it is proportional to the cross-sectional area.

In either case, they will be paying more per vehicle since they use more gas.

15. 15 cent or more, with the stipulation that bicycle lanes (and shoulders that function as such)
get fixed too.

As a cyclist, it annoys me quite a bit to see the car lanes get patched and the shoulder ignored.
