Prepping for conservative visitors is tough!
My brother, his wife, and two children arrive today for a 5 day visit from California.

Both my brother and his wife are conservative republicans. Both are engineers in the defense industry. My brother and I can debate back and forth maturely. My SIL, alas, is a fiery conservative and gets emotional at any disagreement (I just talk weather to her).

So, I've been preparing. Reading FR, watched FOX News once, I may even listen to Rush today. All in preparation for their talking points. I feel like I've lost 20 IQ points in the last couple of days.

Luckily, they only visit once every couple of years. I don't know how you folks that actually live with conservatives handle it.

1. Simply tell them you don't talk about issues where people insist on lying...
....to make their point.

20. I've tried that, but I got a stunned look "name ONE time Fox lied!!?!"
Edited on Mon Jun-20-11 08:58 AM by Patiod
And then you name the lie, and off you go.
"Well, they MOVED the WMDs!"
"But Clinton DID kill Vince Foster!" etc, etc. Ugh.
It's like them citing the Bible - it's tough to argue with the "It was on Fox, so it MUST be true" syndrome.

My dad had it on last week, and the big top-of-the-news "scandal"? People who gave money to the Obama campaign were appointed to government jobs! Some of the donor received stimulus funds! That's right, Obama is the first President in the history of the US to appoint a large donor to a job (say, Ambassador)! And he didn't bar donors from receiving stimulus funds, which absolutely no one else received, I guess. (good on my dad for finding the story funny, and changing the channel back to CNN)

:banghead:

12. Replace it with Clarence Thomas and Meg Whitman posters
with extra points for vintage Schwartzenshagger pictures

Then watch that Streets of San Francisco episode where Karl Malden and Michael Douglas try to stop Arnold before he kills another woman.

Replace one of those posters with the biggest poster of Che you can find, and maybe an Obama poster too. Oh, and run out to a bookstore and get copies of Barbara Ehrenreich's books to leave lying around too.

8. For me it's all about hiding the booze.
Not from them but from me because I wouldn't be able to hold my tongue and their visit would be very short. Sober I have a difficult time not going for the throat. If there's any alcohol in me forget about it.

9. Living in California,
I have to prep my house as well for out-of-state company. 'Course my prepping consists of hiding the pot plants. Either that or being forced to say, "Yes, that IS what you think it is." My M-I-L hasn't been back for two years and I can't tell you how heartbroken I am about that.

Then lock out all TV channels except Current, Free Speech TV and Link TV.

There's no place like home.
