17. Laura Flanders would be good to have on with GRITtv not being aired now...
GRITtv has been shut down since a few weeks ago on Free Speech TV. Don't know if its budgets that they are fighting, since she's already shrank her show from an hour long format to a half hour format earlier. At the end of her last show, she mentioned they are looking at putting together a weekly hour show to start in the Fall, but didn't sound certain about it. Would think if she only has an hourly show, she'd have a lot of time on her hands to be a correspondent too.

but they felt it would compromise the integrity of the show.

Or something like that.

66. Understandable
But if the corporate sponsorship - aka advertising - does not interfere with content, then go for it. Or connect with Current TV and concentrate the progressive movement on Current TV. Your one-stop shop for reality-based news and commentary.

Just look at whats happened to MSNBC and Huffpo recently. They're both on a downhill slide.

Free Speech TV (the network that carried GritTV) is awesome, however. They still have Democracy Now, and Thom Hartmann.

76. My thinking was this
Fox is the manure spreading monolith. HuffPo had potential to combat that, at least online, but we all see what happened there. MSNBC - again, the potential was there, but they demonstrated the timidity of most Democrats. GritTV and other progressive outlets are tiny in contrast. Current TV with KO and other intelligent programming could begin to serve as a counterbalance. I'm not suggesting necessarily that all the other progressive outlets be rolled in - that's probably not consistent with the models envisioned with by the other outlets or by Current, but the more powerful the programming, and the more powerful the voice from Current, there's at least a fighting chance to act as a counterweight to the RW propaganda.

74. Its not about getting the sponsors, IMO
its about making sure they stay out of the running of your network, sponsors should not have
the power to dictate how you run your network or do your journalistic job.

I sure hope that their contracts states clearly that no sponsor is allowed a say as to how
the show is run, otherwise take your business elsewhere.

I only have cable Internet – just “antenna” TV – but learned that you can watch Olbermann for FREE at this website (NOTE: Not sure what will be showing if you go there now):
http://ready-tv.com/?p=109

I have no idea if they offer CC (Closed Captioning, which I would need since I'm deaf) but the price sure is right in case Current TV is one of those premium stations.

Olbermann is also available for FREE through the Apple iTunes Store – but you’ve got to setup an account, download some software and then subscribe … so I’ll let you just read the procedure where I found it:

Looks like a good link. I just compared it to my Dish feed and Dish is about 2 seconds behind the Ready-TV feed. Plus Ready-TV says "24/7" so that would allow multiple viewings of Countdown and other Current TV programs throughout the night and daytime.

Cheers! :toast:

32. favorite moment
My favorite moment was his "special comment," which he delivered right after the Michael Moore segment. (Apologies for any errors in transcription.)

"It is fitting at this point I think to tell you, in the briefest of "Special Comments" tonight, what it is we intend to be doing here. This is to be a newscast of contextualization. It is to be presented with a viewpoint -- that the weakest citizen of this country is more important than the strongest corporation. That the nation is losing its independence through the malfeasance of one political party and the timidity of another. And that even though you and I should not have to be the last line of defense, apparently we are -- so we damn well better start being it. The words of another are suited to this moment. This is from, of all things, Harriet Beecher Stowe's magazine profile of Abraham Lincoln, written in 1863. It pertained to the actual Civil War then, and pertains to the silent civil war being waged against us now. She wrote: 'The revolution through which the American nation is passing is not a mere local convulsion. It is a war for principle, which concerns all mankind. It is the war for the working classes of mankind as against the usurpations of privileged aristocracies. You can make nothing else out of it. That is the reason why, like a shaft of light in the Judgment Day, it has gone through all nations -- dividing to the right and left the multitudes. For us and our cause: all the common working classes of Europe, all that toil and sweat and are oppressed. Against us: all privileged classes, nobles, princes, bankers, and great manufacturers, and all who live at ease. A silent instinct piercing to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, has gone through the earth, and sent every soul with instinctive certainty where it belongs. No sophistry could blind or deceive them. They knew that our cause was their cause, and they have suffered their part heroically as if fighting by our side, because they knew that our victory was to be their victory. On the other side, all aristocrats and holders of exclusive privileges have felt the instinctive opposition, and the sympathy with struggling aristocracy, for they too feel that our victory will be their doom.'"

Dang...!

but admitted he was wrong and that Obama was right, about the necessity of passing it?

Of course, I find it amazing that a contrary view could possibly be considered liberal, but some people seem to think otherwise. I don't think Olbermann has changed at all. He's a rational progressive. He always in the past held the Obama administration's feet to the fire, and he is today.

Have you got $80/month for me to get satellite TV? Well, neither do I. :(

The cable companies are already quietly doing all they can to stop Keith from getting ratings--putting Current on a higher tier, or dropping it entirely, the very week before Countdown debuted. Being that one of the satellite companies is owned by Pirate Rupert, it's just a matter of time before the only way we'll be able to see Keith is on YouTube, the internet, or Dish.

IMHO, Current ought to sue the carriers that have engaged in such shady practices. Don't they have contracts? How can they just drop channels like this? A good lawsuit might give Current the financial boost it needs, LOL!

73. Fortunately "Pirate Rupert" no longer has a major stake in DirecTV.
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 12:15 PM by mwooldri
A few years there was a stock swap: Liberty Media owned a significant part of News Corp. "Pirate Rupert" wanted more control over News Corp so a stock swap was arranged: Liberty Media would get News Corps' DirecTV stock in exchange for Liberty's News Corp stock.

Why Current ended up on higher tiers is simple: no-one watched them! If Current ends up being wildly popular, Current can re-negotiate its carriage terms later on and insist on being on a lower tier. It's the same old "demand/supply" issue. Also Current is on one of Dish's higher tiers anyway (the 200+ package).

59. I loved it til I turned it off.
Which would have been about halfway through Markos' appearance. I'm not the biggest fan of Scarborough, but I felt like watching that sort of petty, vindictive crap was a waste of my time and, more importantly, Olbermann's.

Unfortunately, that means I missed that righteous special comment, but I caught it on DU today.

62. Yeah, whatever happened to the charges that Kos is a RW tool?
Or CIA plant or some-such? True or not, he creeps me out.

Olbermann can amass a shitload of progressive credibility without dragging Markos into the community swimming pool.

63. I wouldn't have even minded it if if was just Markos commenting on politics.
I don't believe he is either a rightwinger or some CIA asset. I just didn't care for the schoolyard-like tit-for-tat that went on after his political commentary. It's childish.

(Also, I just realized that I missed the special comment because it was at the beginning of the show, not the end, and I missed the first few minutes of the thing as well, damn it.)

86. He was explaining why he was banned from MSNBC and how RW Joe Dead Intern Scabby
can have regular guests banned to keep a Congressman's dirty little secrets secret.

I took this segment as one on censorship by MSNBC.

72. Kos a RW tool?
Where in hell did that come from? I've seen absolutely no evidence of that.
Sounds like a RW tool trying to smear someone who is as Lefty as the day is long.

82. Don't shoot the messenger ...
... I recall some kind of drama a year or so ago about KOS being 'uncovered' as either a CIA plant or a RW plant. I don't give a rats' ass about him enough to have followed whatever results anyone turned up.

And just because you've 'seen absolutely no evidence' doesn't mean it didn't happen. Google is your friend. :eyes:

60. More reason why I'll get my news from PBS or just read a paper
I do like Keith but I miss the day when the news came from someone who didn't represent the left or the right but just the people who are watching.

I'd rather just read my news and form my own opinion.

But having said that I do wish him the best of luck with his new show.

77. Countdown has never been a news show
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 01:31 PM by eilen
It is a social, political and current event commentary/talk show. It isn't called Current News with Keith Olbermann.

I wish we still had the "news" like we used to. My parents watched Cronkite. It lasted only 30 minutes in the evening. I remember lots of Vietnam war footage. If something really important happened they interrupted regular programming.

65. Too late to recommend but I'm truly heartened by the tone of Countdown with KO
THIS is where the Democratic Party needs to take its cues from to determine the point to START bargaining with the Republican Cult. Not from the losing right of center starting position we begin from now.

69. Careful when you TiVo it...
I grabbed the hour via DirecTV, then started watching it at about 8:30. Since he rolled over the top of the hour, I missed the tail end of Markos. If you record it, record the following show too. (I'm accustomed to doing this for Pittsburgh Penguin games.)

88. From my perspective
Olbermannn is a centrist. Claiming to be waaaaaaay left is the frame Republicans put on everyone who isn't to the right of Attila the Hun.

90. I suppose the closer you get to the truth
in this Orwellian decade the further left you get, at least as far as pugs and their very own MSM are concerned.
