18. Less Significant
It bothers me in almost every election all the media, and we talk about is guns (4 percent), gays (2-5 percent), and religion. We discuss all this stuff, and ignore the thing that will make all of these things better together. If we make the economy better, create more jobs, a living wage, good homes for everyone, a clean functional society, health care, insurance for everyone, then people won't be so pissed off that they are just looking for someone to hate.

And Oh yea, the media hopefully will stop singling out a group, or groups for hatred. Hatred is mostly a distraction, as well as prejudices, from the idea that we can make things better for all of us, by focusing on the things that make things better for all of us, and not on all the hate.

A lack of tolerance for people who's views don't match their own

Also, you'll be able to see how each person voted, when they voted, and how sober (or not) they were when they voted.

South Postpones Rising Again For Yet Another Year

HUNTSVILLE, AL–For the 135th straight year since Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, representatives for the South announced Monday that the region has postponed plans to rise again.

Enlarge ImageThree of the estimated 45 million Southerners who have not yet gotten around to rising again.

"Make no mistake, the South shall rise again," said Knox Pritchard, president of the Huntsville-based Alliance Of Confederate States. "But we're just not quite ready to do it now. Hopefully, we'll be able to rise again real soon, maybe even in 2001."

38. Ahh yes, that too.
I chose something else (not saying what;-)) but now that I think of it, you have a point. Not long ago, I read a Texas thread and there were some downright nasty things being said there about Texans. Another recent one had to do w/the southeast 'bible belt' states. They both just seemed unfairly unkind to me as a casual viewer from afar.

I've never visited these places let alone lived there, however if it's as bad as people say, then that, imho should be all the more reason DUer's should be supportive of libs/progressives from these 'red' areas.

35. I won't say it's a big problem, but the only bias I see frequently, and almost never challenged
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 01:03 PM by dmallind
is the use of the word "fat" as an insult or derogatory classification, assumed to denote stupidity, laziness, Republicanism and lack of self respect.

Closely followed by the word "white" assumed to denote parochiality, smug fecklessness, lack of sophistication and Republicanism.

A distant third but often seen in the trifecta is "suburbanite" - generally used to denote a combination of the above.

Apparently all sensible and worthy Dem voters are whipcord-lithe minority or multi-racial folks who live within walking distance of City Hall in large conurbations.

Certainly all the others listed are bigger societal problems, but on DU specifically,

a) they are always challenged quickly
b) they are generally tangential, not direct. Nobody says "women should damn well stay in the kitchen or the bedroom out of sight of men with more important things to do" like they say often yes in paraphrase (but close) "fat people should get off their asses at Old Country Buffet and into the gym - the sight of them sickens me". Complaints about sexism, racism. homophobia etc here generally revolve around thoughtless phrases, political triage, and inherent but not overt prejudice rather than overt scorn.

56. so you admit that atheism is a religion?

I got in a big, long, insane back and forth a couple weeks ago about atheism being a religion. It seems that atheists don't believe that they are expressing a religious belief by stating their belief that there is no god.

As an agnostic I see the unquestioning belief that there is a god and the unquestioning belief that there is no god as equal opposites, and I payed a price for that view point.

87. You should have paid a price for that.
One is the belief in a god. The other is a lack of belief in any god. It is not a statement that there are no gods, just a declaration that there is no reason to believe in one.

And since we are talking about pet peeves, atheism and agnosticism are not mutually exclusive. You can be both; they deal with different concepts.

76. I voted "Fundamentalism", so it wouldn't feel left out.
Seriously, it's a message board. The hand-wringing on the message board over the message board gets to be a bit much, at times, but I've been here 7 years, and as long as I've been here people have been complaining about how 'fucked up it's recently gotten' and how it 'used to be better' and 'how can we fix it'

Hide thread, that's how you fix it.

79. Other
A tendency at times for people to quote right-wing sources if they support their view on a particular issue (e.g. anti-Bush, anti-war, pro-natural-health), and sometimes to go from there to accepting certain right-wing ideas.

This can lead to various other consequences, ranging from xenophobia (most often either the form of antisemitism whereby 'Israel/Zionists own/run America/the world', or the form of Islamophobia whereby 'Muslim immigrants are taking over Europe') to economic right-libertarian views.

While there will always be some trolls on a site like DU, and some people who join because they are liberal on only one or two issues, I think the biggest reason for the consequences that I mentioned is the acceptance of right-wing sources as valid because of a particular issue.

Most people don't do any of these things, but occasionally it happens. Which brings me again to the public service announcement: always distrust most of the British press, especially the tabloids, especially the Daily Mail!
