between Chattanooga (roughly 35 -45 mins. to get downtown) and Cleveland (approx. 20-25 minutes to Keith St. if I stay off the freeway and use back roads), which is much quicker than the I-75.

You're in Cooper's district IIRC. :hi: And congrats again! :woohoo:

14. True. I had a meeting with Jimbo the other day
along with my MoveOn buds. It went as well as it could have with a Blue Dog rep I suppose. But for a guy who stated outright that his hero was FDR, he sure doesn't have the populist fire about him that FDR had. Of course, even in the 30s I'd have been a commie. :)

Have you guys got any good Dems to run over there?

21. I read every word. And especially loved this part....
Pawlenty’s plan, like all Republican economic plans and policies of the last 30 years, are based on false premises, proven false by experience: premises like giving more handouts to the capitalists will benefit the working class; premises like less regulation will create jobs, while keeping us all healthy and safe; premises like the “invisible hand” will bring prosperity to all.

Very good reading.

Your ducks are certainly in a row here.

50. Don Aslett is the original decluttering advice guy.
His books started coming out in the 1980s. He had a cleaning service in Idaho and observed that most cleaning was caused by too much clutter.

He wrote a book about how to clean house easily, called IS THERE LIFE AFTER HOUSEWORK? and he had one chapter on clutter. He got more letters about that one chapter than any other part of the book, and realized he had hit a nerve.

He realized he needed to write books to show people how to clean out their crud. The first one was CLUTTER'S LAST STAND.
The next one was more of a how-to guide on judging your junk, called NOT FOR PACKRATS ONLY.

I saw him at a housewares show and he sent me a free copy of the book. I had no idea I was quoted in it until I got to that page!!!

He's a cool guy.

I don't watch the Hoarders show. It gives me horrible flashbacks to my childhood and my mom's hoarding.

What I've managed to do is have an AREA that I can clutter up without making it the whole house. It's a problem for a lot of people. I've known folks that were MUCH worse than I am about it.

:) Life's funny. I played music professionally for 30 years or so, have written 100s of songs, had 50 or so published (song publishing is not the same as writing, BTW) and even had a few recorded back in the day.

I get a request to write an analysis of the Pawlenty "plan", toss something off and they liked it. Who woulda thunk it.

41. Classic style rock and, of course in Nashville,
country.

I'm actually working on a 3 song music project now. Since I don't have any money, I have to trade out with my BFF :) for studio time and we pretty much do everything (instruments and vocals) between the two of us. I put down some background vocals tonight as a matter of fact.

These songs are all political and I'm quite proud of the way they're coming together.

When I write political songs, I can write in parables or I can preach. I prefer to write a story that illustrates a working class point rather than write a sermon about it.

48. I am trying to figure out how socialism works
I don't consider myself a dim bulb, but I recognize I am not the brightest on the tree. Some things I just don't get.

I've been reading different websites, trying to understand socialism and how it really works. How would it work day to day? When I get up in the morning, then what?

When I turn on the radio, what will I hear? Would the federal government own all the radio and TV stations, or would some other non-corporate entity own them?

When I go to work, who owns and runs the place I work - the federal government or the people who work there?

Would people who have more difficult work be paid more? Who determines the pay rates?

If I get tired of what I am doing, or want to live somewhere else, how would I go about switching jobs? And, if the office or factory or store or whatever is owned by the employees, would I then lose my ownership portion? Would I be compensated for that?

Who owns where I live? Would people still own their own houses, or would everything be owned by a public entity at some level?

I read about class struggles and collectives and the labor theory of value, but I am so Americanized, it is hard for me to visualize exactly what it means to me as one individual. I feel that I need to understand it on a practical level before I decide whether or not to support it.

Thank you for your assistance!

52. I'll try and explain this the best I can.
Though Socialist-n-TN will likely do a better job. When you get to work the employees would run the business. There might be managers and such, but those managers would be elected by the workers. Each worker would get a vote on who they want and would have oversight over them so they can't abuse the power they have been given. Think of worker co-ops. Each worker gets an equal share of the profits of the business because they all own the business.

If you get tired of what you are doing or want to move that would not be a problem. As for compensation that would likely be left up to the individual shop to decide its policies on that. However, under socialism there would be a strong safety net so that even if decided you hated your job and quit you wouldn't have to worry about where your next meal came from until you found a job that better suited you. In fact under MY ideal socialist system artists, philosophers, musicians, etc would all be paid a decent living stipend so they could paint, make music, study questions of truth, etc.

You would own your house. In socialism houses,TVs, cars, computers, video games, etc. fall under personal property which is NOT the same thing as private property. Private property, which is the means of production are what is in the public hands.

Does that help any?

53. The problem is that there's a LOT of versions of
socialism to pick from. The word a lot of times means what the user wants it to mean.

My version would be ownership by the people as represented by their government of all of the "general welfare" industries. Food, clothing, basic shelter, energy, education, medical care and ANYTHING that is NEEDED to exist in a basic way would be owned in common and would be priorities. They would be provided at low or no cost and paid for by taxation. The taxation could be in money or in labor.

It's kind of late. Why don't we do it this way. Post a question about one aspect of socialism in this or other thread about socialism on the board and we can ALL hash that ONE aspect out. Then move on to another aspect. There's a lot of socialists on this board and I would be curious as to what their ideas would be too.
