Keith Olbermann's 'Countdown' Beats CNN in Target Demo
The premiere of Current’s Countdown With Keith Olbermann averaged 179,000 viewers in news’ target demographic of 25- to 54-year-olds Monday at 8 p.m., according to numbers provided by Current.

That’s an improvement of more than 83 percent compared to Current’s fourth quarter primetime average of 30,000.

Countdown also beat CNN in the demo at 8 p.m. – by a wide margin. Eliot Spitzer’s In the Arena pulled in 89,000 viewers in the demo. But MSNBC’s Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell notched 237,000. Nevertheless, it is a solid start for Olbermann on his new network, which is in about 37 percent fewer households than CNN and MSNBC.

Olbermann has downplayed ratings expectation, but he’s clearly gunning for the competition on his former network. His show will consistently run past the 9 p.m. hour, a tactic commonly employed to stanch channel switching. “We’re very pleased,” said Olbermann. “But like I said last week, it’s one night. We’ll need a couple of weeks to know where we¹re starting, and we¹re truly interested in next year and especially 2013.”

1. Thom Hartmann as his lead-in, and then Shuster after him
and maybe Katrina Van den Heuval after that..and there would be no "need" for CNN or MSNBC

Cureent should also try a 3 hr morning show to rival dead-intern Joey & his clubhouse.

2. I wonder if that number comes close to counting all the secondary on-line views at
YouTube and various mirror on-line repostings, such as it DU. I want Keith to get all the credit where credit is due.

6. People have to get used to finding the channel, those who have it
and if it gets on all cable networks, those numbers will be higher. Great start though considering he had no MSM help with it as far as I know.

7. Come on. Your ilk was saying that Olbermann would take down O'Donnell
last night. But today, nary a mention. What happened on the way to the coronation?

9. He was only about 100K behind O'Donnell in the demo
on his first night. That's nothing to sneeze at.

(I'm not one who said he'd beat O'D last night. The network takes time to grow; so far, buzz about the show has been largely on the internet)

10. Well, because I don't get Current on my cable network. I watched
it on YouTube. Did I get counted? I think not. I'm calling my network tomorrow to ask that they add Current to their repertoire. I wonder how many people were looking all over the net to catch his show? I'm thrilled with the number counted, but wish the invisible numbers could be checked out.

11. I would love to see Ronald Reagan, Jr. on Current but I am not
sure if he is just a frequent guest on MSNBC or contractual. I know he does the radio show, but he is excellent and would make a great addition to Current. Bill Press also lost his show when the Bush* Administration objected to the Spin Room (I loved that show). At that time, no one else was still talking about Election 2000 except Press. He deserves another shot on cable, and he is an excellent commentator.

13. it's tough considering current is not as available. they need to make podcasts available.
they did a good job of getting out there and getting people to go looking for the channel, but they really need to up their internet presence and the podcasts.

14. It's against the cable carriers rule to give full shows as podcasts.

17. The statistical model for ratings is no longer a valid instrument. There
are too many in the target demographic that watched over the internet, and they were not counted. Thanks to my roku and a handy Du'er, I have it streaming to my TV now.
