By KARL ROVE

President Barack Obama is likely to be defeated in 2012. The reason is that he faces four serious threats. The economy is very weak and unlikely to experience a robust recovery by Election Day. Key voter groups have soured on him. He's defending unpopular policies. And he's made bad strategic decisions.

Let's start with the economy. Unemployment is at 9.1%, with almost 14 million Americans out of work. Nearly half the jobless have been without work for more than six months. Mr. Obama promised much better, declaring that his February 2009 stimulus would cause unemployment to peak at 8% by the end of summer 2009 and drop to roughly 6.8% today.

After boasting in June 2010 that "Our economy . . . is now growing at a good clip," he laughingly admitted last week, "Shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected." The humor will be lost on most. In Wednesday's Bloomberg poll, Americans believe they are worse off than when Mr. Obama took office by a 44% to 34% margin.

The last president re-elected with unemployment over 7.2% was FDR in 1936. Ronald Reagan overcame 7.2% unemployment because the rate was dropping dramatically (it had been over 10%) as the economy grew very rapidly in 1983 and 1984. Today, in contrast, the Federal Reserve says growth will be less than 3% this year and less than 3.8% next year, with unemployment between 7.8% and 8.2% by Election Day.

3. Of course unemployment is high. The corporations and banks
are still sitting on a trillion in cash that they won't use for hiring, business expansion, or lending. It's all part of the plan.

11. I think all of the pugs
have a couple of thousand in their back pocket from their pet corps. and CEOs. They're not able to exist unless they're helping out all those millionaires and billionaires. Just comes to show that dirty politics are not only not dead, but flourishing!

4. If unemployment is below 8.0%
Obama will be re-elected. If it hovers around 10.0% his re-election will be in serious jeopardy especially if Romney is the GOP nominee. IMHO

14.  I really wish
people in this country weren't as ignorant as they are. Why is it so difficult for them to see the intimate connection between Bush and his policies and the recession and lack of jobs after he leaves office? This shit was even coming down while the moron was in there, so it came as no surprise when it finally hit. And lest we forget, the backing disaster happened while he was in office.

10. Yes
I agree. It's just not polite to post that as the title. ;)

I hate 99.9% of the Bush regime, and think they were ALL assholes. (There is that lone person standing in the corner, I can't really blame, since he's only the janitor, and he's worked at the white house since Johnson.) :*

13. Rove is an idiot, as usual. Dems have not forgotten Carter's Rose Garden Campaign.
He can not honestly expect Obama and Co. to stop raising money and to stop criticizing the opposition, just because he taunts them for not being presidential enough. But maybe that is exactly what he expects. Maybe he thinks that they really, truly want to hear what he has to say.

Rove needs to read the Art of War instead of just talking about the Art of War.

17. It's the Economy, Stupid
It's always the economy. Because people don't really care about politics. Rove is right about 10% unemployment being a threat to the incumbent. High unemployment is always a threat to the incumbent.

I don't understand why Democrats are not taking the economy more seriously. It's the whole ballgame. If you're out of work, you vote for the other guy, the one who's not in office. Don't assume that voters are rational; they're not.

19. Obama's big mistake is offending his base.
He needs us to speak up for him and defend him. But how can we? He has let us down too often.

He has not been nearly strong enough in defending unions. And now he is going after Social Security. Huge mistakes.

And he should never, never, never have compromised on tax breaks for the rich. That was the stupidest mistake ever.

The only way he will win in 2012 is if he faces a really ignoramus Republican. And even then, there are several issues of corruption related to people in his administration. He needs to fire a few people if he wants to survive 2012. The ties of some of his staff to Wall Street could get him into big trouble.

Obama does not really pay nearly enough attention to what ordinary Americans think about the banks and Wall Street.
