It's a nutritionist's nightmare: America's hot new snack, deep fried Kool-Aid balls!

Calorie counts on virtually every product you can buy, constant warnings about sodium levels and sugar - it's an age of constant reminders of healthy eating.
America's latest food craze, however, sets the clock back a thousand years: deep fried Kool-Aid balls.

The drink beloved by generations of Americans now comes in snack form in the shape of crispy little balls that resemble tiny creatures from a Fifties horror B-movie.

The Kool-Aid balls were created by chef Charlie Boghosian who quickly found his diabetes and obesity bombs are a massive hit.

He simply drops spoonfuls of the batter, made up of the famous drink mix, flour and water, into the burning fat, lets it sizzle for a minute and bang, the latest contribution to the culinary arts is born.

I love fried food

Don't get me wrong

And the perfect burger can bring a tear to my eye

Not to mention the greatness that is the Corn-Flake Crusted French Toast fried (of course) in butter and bacon grease

But that shit???

9. It looks scary.
I cannot imagine eating a stick of deep fried butter.

Reminds me of the old SNL skit where they all sit around pigging out on sausages, cheering for da bears, and having heart attacks. :puke:

7. That doesn't even look good.
I'm from the South, where the motto seems to be, "if you can't fry it, it ain't fit to eat", but damn, that's just gross. :puke:

10. Not really.
I don't speak for all nutritionists of course, but anyone that eats anything coming out of a fryolater either doesn't know, doesn't care or is just too stupid to really think of what they put in their body.

And they sure as hell couldn't care what any nutritionist would ever say to them.

15. Yes, but these snacks exist because of a backlash against nutrition and sense.
So it isn't very surprising to hear of them.

16. That looks disgusting!
Same thing with those deep-fried candy bar things. They make me gag just looking at them. Yes, I do like my once-a-year fried-food fest I enjoy at the County Fair every year but I limit it to a corn dog and a couple of deep-fried zucchinis. But deep fried butter? Is that a joke?

17. It can't be worse than any other fried food.
Edited on Sun Jun-26-11 08:58 AM by Motown_Johnny
It is just a batter flavored with some kool-aid.

It can't be 90% kool-aid, I would guess more like 5%.

This is mostly flour and eggs, I honestly don't see what the big deal here is. Deep fried candy bars would be much worse for you than this. Kool-aid is so concentrated that a little would go a long way. It may be a little worse than eating hush puppies but that is about it.

(No, I am not a nutritionist but I have a degree in Culinary Arts which included some nutrition classes.)
