Fox News host Glenn Beck responded with an awkward suggestion when Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum confirmed on his program that he's signed his name to the "Cut, Cap and Balance" pledge, which entails opposing any debt limit increase without significant spending cuts, enforceable spending caps and congressional approval of a balanced budget amendment.

"I could kiss you in the mouth," said Beck to Santorum on Thursday. A few moments later after the pair laughed, he added, "I was just kidding, I don't want to kiss you in the mouth."

He didn't even say on the mouth, but in the mouth, as in a real over the top kind of kiss. Even as a joke, that was kind of an awkward thing to say to any politician.

There's a lot of regional variation in preposition usage and also a lot by age and education level. L2 learners of English also bring in their L1 preposition use quite a bit.

Expressions like "hit in the mouth" make it a bit more complicated as well because analogy can come into play. Where I grew up, nobody ever hit anybody "on" the mouth. "Hit" required "in."

I mean, when's the last time, in film or real life, you saw somebody hit somebody *in* the mouth.

"Uh, excuse me. Open wide, I really want to take a swipe at your uvula, but your teeth are in the way. And lower that tongue, too, it's disgusting. Oh, well, open up so I can knock them out, too. Otherwise I'm just hitting you *on* the mouth, and that's not what most people say."

"Kiss" required "on," however I'm not going to impose my idiolect on others' speech retroactively. There's a lot of variation, and while my speech is fairly standard it's not absolutely standard (note that the "standard" actually doesn't bother to say much about some pretty large areas of English grammar).
