1. So we are really under the rule of some king who just changes out his successor?
Funky.

6. no, because many of us are probably related to that same king
I don't have a connection to that king that I know of myself but so far I have that I am related to Ulysses Grant, William Howard Taft, FDR, Gerald Ford, Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland, Millard Fillmore, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Charles Gates Dawes (Veep under Coolidge), Sarah Palin, Adlai Stevenson (by marriage), Tomas Masaryk (President of Czechoslovakia, related by marriage), Oliver Ellsworth (Supreme Court Chief Justice), Melville Weston Fuller (Supereme Court Chief Justice), Stephen Douglas, William Williams (signer of the Declaration of Independence), Mike Huckabee, Mamie Eisenhower, Sarah Jane Mayfield (Ronald Reagan's first wife) and David J. Brewer (Supreme Court Justice)

and there are doubtless hundreds of millions of Americans who can say the same thing. Remember all the Spencer descendants in America who were related to Princess Diana? That same king likely has 200 million descendants in the US making the odds very good that a President would be related to him.

31. It isn't that most people don't have some connection to
royalty, it is more that they don't know that connection.

Having worked on my family's genealogy for years, I keep finding new and surprising branches. Recently someone was very impressed when I mentioned a connection to the Mayflower, but I just laughed and explained that it was hardly a great accomplishment. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. have a branch somewhere that will take them back to the Mayflower - probably more like millions. People really had large families back then!

If someone becomes President of the United States, genealogists from all over will be more inclined to research their ancestral roots, whereas most people barely know a few generations of their families.

4. Most of us are likely to be related to that king too, though
If all of the Presidents but one are, and John "Lackland" lived so long ago, then he's going to have many descendants.

We're all probably related to any given peasant in Europe of that time, too.

Very strange way to spend time.

5. yeah, tons of us are related to that asshole, a.k.a. one of the villains of the Robin Hood legends
Prince John: Poor John. Who says poor John? Don't everybody sob at once! My God, if I went up in flames there's not a living soul who'd pee on me to put the fire out!

Prince Richard: Let's strike a flint and see.

(from "The Lion in Winter")

I kinda doubt that I'm related to most of the presidents & kings
although I believe the Roosevelts had some Estonians in their ancestry.

35. One of my favorite factoids (from _Harpers Magazine_): the statistical
odds that a man alive today is a direct descendant of Ghengis Khan is 1 in 200. (Of course, the odds are even better in certain parts of the world.)

Ghengis Khan had hundreds of concubines, so he cast his seed widely indeed.
