S.F. arts director under fire for commuting to Rio
The $147,000-a-year head of San Francisco's public arts program is in the hot seat with his bosses, partly for spending way too much time working out of his second home - in Rio de Janeiro.
Cultural Affairs Director Luis Cancel - who was brought on by former Mayor Gavin Newsom - was the subject of a lengthy closed session of the city's Arts Commission earlier this month.
The commission's concerns centered on Cancel's treatment of staff and his many absences from the office, including his telecommuting from Rio.
Commissioners have asked for Cancel's time sheets for the past year to see how many days outside the office he marked as work and how many as vacation.
